Topia World Builder
Download on the AppStore
3 out of 5

PROS

  • Casual simplicity; easy to pick up, control and enjoy.
  • Virtual herds bring your world to life.

CONS

  • Lacking in any focused objectives; more of a toy than an evolving game.

VERDICT

Topia World Builder has a lot of potential to be a creative and immersive interactive world-builder, but for now it's more 'time wasting' than 'time enriching'.

This isn't so much a game as it is an open-ended toy of sorts. Topia World Builder is a risky release from Crescent Moon Games and Solid 60, but there's method behind the madness.

With news of the game appearing around the same time as From Dust on the XBLA, it touted some impressive features, many of which have been realized in this current version.

Although mostly a free-play title where you can shape a planetoid, creating mountains, valleys, plains, rivers, lakes and so forth, the game responds beautifully by ensuring no matter what you do, the end result is somewhat realistic. Trees and plants will grow in arid zones, while inhospitable lands will spurn their growth. Throw in some herbivores and they'll happily frolic and reproduce, but you can also throw in a carnivore or three to spice things up.

While the game is promising to add in a focused set of missions in the future, for now Topia remains a beautiful way to distract yourself from the drudgery of real life and start working on a virtual one.

***DO NOT PURCHASE! Been over a year and there has been nothing added to this game via updates, it is too simple to do anything, therefore it's not a game and the non-existent updates make you feel like the dev abandoned it! What an idiot! He had some real potential for a gem here...***

Chesco, it's actually been 6 months since an update and 10 and a half months since a feature update. I don't think the game had been abandoned and you should really keep your anger under control.

Genius idea, works great, just not enough to do in order to validate a purchase. Bookmark and wait another year for this one in hopes of more updates.

Somethings wrong with the video on this one, its showing a news round up, not a review.
