PROS

  • Non-stop tank on plane action.
  • Lots of upgrades and power-ups to play with.

CONS

  • Sticky aiming controls.
  • Insanely repetitive after only a short time.

VERDICT

Cannon Fighter requires more than just a mood for mindless action, you'll need to also be able to ignore the controls that seem to flat out ignore you.

If you've got a penchant for destruction and a vendetta against planes, then you might be the person imecha was going for when they recently released Cannon Fighter for the App Store. In this action title you'll take control of a cannon/tank in an attempt to shoot down as many planes as possible before they blow you to kingdom-come.

I must say that I have more than a slight beef with the controls in Cannon Fighter as they seem to require far too much concentration to keep your aiming from locking up. What looks like a virtual stick is more akin to a slide-bar, however there's a persistent bug that causes the aim to 'lock' if you don't keep your finger on the limited button area, making it hard to react to new incoming planes while you jab the controls to get them to respond again.

Thankfully the visuals have been given a lot more care and attention, with vibrant plane designs that do use some palette swapping to bulk up the numbers, however the overall variation keeps things interesting as each plane reacts in a unique way. Players have a chance between waves to spend cash earned on upgrades, but power-ups dropped from the enemies also provide powerful weapons that can help decimate waves handily.

Cannon Fighter is a fun, mindless distraction for a short time, but the initially frustrating controls don't get much better over time and it would have been nice to see some gameplay variation beyond simply throwing more planes at your cannon; this is really only for action fans stuck for more content.
