Bubble Pets: 8-BIT RETRO TWITCH ACTION
Download on the AppStore
4 out of 5

PROS

  • Fun, fast-paced whack-a-mole style gameplay.
  • Retro theme without the usual ugly or ear-piercing features.
  • Alternate seasonal theme and unlockable gameplay mode.

CONS

  • Short lived appeal; focused on high-score obsessed players.

VERDICT

The biggest shortcoming of Bubble Pets is the audience it seems to be aimed towards - while those with short attention spans will love the flashy over the top style, it also means they're unlikely to remain interested for very long either.

Bubble Pets: 8-BIT RETRO TWITCH ACTION by miiifan games delivers (almost) exactly what the title claims, giving ADD suffering gamers a manic shooter experience that punishes anything other than perfection over the course of its multiple 45 second long levels.

All you have to do is touch every creature that pops up except for the one declared as the 'bad pet' before starting the level. Bonus points are awarded for not missing any taps and on later stages you'll have to face obstacles that obscure the screen, including a dinosaur and King Kong. The Fever Mode power-up kicks the game in to overdrive, causing the game to flash colors at random while pets jump up and down at hyper-speed, but much like combos the points awarded during this time is increased significantly.

While I wouldn't go so far as to call it '8-Bit', it definitely has the retro feel locked up with its simple pixel designs and frantic chiptune background music. An alternate Christmas theme is available from the menu (along with appropriate musical tunes), but for those after a real challenge the unlockable 199x mode will test your skills as the game plays at the Fever Mode speed by default with only 1 life given to finish the game.

Bubble Pets: 8-BIT RETRO TWITCH ACTION is a strangely compelling action title, but the frantic pace can only be enjoyed for so-long before it either becomes simply frustrating or too much to handle. A decent mind-bending whack-a-mole style shooter for those who enjoy their themes to be a little over the top.
