OK, so you've collected the three magical keys to open the portal that lets you enter the evil overlord's lair and the mystical armor and weaponry you have equipped will keep you safe from his nefarious spells, but did you stop to think about the evil monster's feelings? WackyLands Boss by Fair Play Labs and Chillingo gives you the chance to find out just what motivates an evil monster as you mow your way across the countryside, flinging heroes left and right to get that perfect view for your cave.
Considering your hulking size, regular controls would only make life harder as you attempt to swat the tiny foes out of your way, so a swipe and touch system is used instead. Holding either side of the screen will move your 'boss', while taps and swipes allow you to dodge, attack and grab princesses to snack on. It's not a perfect system and quick, fine detailed maneuvers such as turning around to unleash a fireball can result in taking too much damage, but clever deployment of your abilities and making use of your dodge mitigates a lot of this frustration once you're comfortable with the controls.
As you progress you'll unlock new items and 'evolutions' for your boss, allowing you to customize his stats, abilities and appearance accordingly. This variety is made all the more amusing thanks to references to other games and the appearance of green-pajama clad heroes with a shield and bombs made me giggle with glee.
Like a lot of beat'em ups, the combat can get repetitive, but constant upgrades, new items and abilities help to keep the boredom at bay and when all is done you'll have a few added minigames to explore as well. Control issues aside, WackyLands Boss is definitely worth checking out.
