PROS

  • Large action-RPG campaign.
  • Lots of replay value; additional classes, hard modes, etc.
  • Detailed sprite artwork and cut designs.
  • Online features including an Auction House and IAP.

CONS

  • Platforming not always solid; though players are rarely punished for this.
  • Counter-intuitive map system.

VERDICT

ILLUSIA doesn't break the mold, but the platforming action-RPG genre is safe in GAMEVIL's capable hands and players can expect hours of fun as they explore the vast lands Aztaran.

By now the Korean mobile game developer GAMEVIL has earned an almost permanent free-pass for its new RPGs, having already shown just how well they can pull them off with heavy hitters like HYBRID, ZENONIA and even their sports-based titles like Soccer and Baseball Superstars. ILLUSIA represents another small shift in the game catalog of GAMEVIL and players can now test their platforming and action-RPG skills while attempting to save the world of Aztaran.

After picking between the starting classes of a Fighter or a Magician, you'll be thrown in to the magical and downright bizarre world of Aztaran, starting off your journey beating down raccoons and kangaroos and working your way up to ogres, dragons and angels. Much like their other titles, the controls are responsive and easy to use, though the platforming can be a bit tricky at times depending on which speed setting you've selected to play at. What's even more surprising is how solid the smaller interface buttons are (including the quick slot buttons) despite their extremely condensed menus and icons.

The world of Aztaran and Illusia is beautifully rendered in its pixel-art style and each sprite pops with charisma and charm, backed up by neat special effects to keep things exciting. Items collected and equipped on your character will also change their appearance, with the Magician having a but of a furry obsession and the Fighter taking the opportunity to outfit himself in classic war regalia.

The story itself is nothing too special, but there are enough clever moments in the dialogue to keep you coming back for more, while leveling and questing can have the repetitive edge taken off by making use of town-portals and paid-for upgrades. Finishing ILLUSIA is just the beginning of the adventure and action-RPG fans after their next purchase will definitely want to grab this title.
