PROS

  • Simple yet addictive gameplay.
  • Sometimes you plan a route, sometimes things happen on the fly.

CONS

  • The sound effects get annoying quickly.
  • Penguins can't drive cars!

VERDICT

An odd concept based around a simple gesture that keeps adding new gameplay elements. This is the blueprint for a successful iPhone game and most should enjoy what Crazy Escape has to offer.

Wolves like to eat sheep. From folk tales to Warner Bros. Cartoons, this has been popularized through western culture. One thing that has been omitted from these tales however is the Penguins that drive up in jeeps to rescue the sheep from their lupine oppressors. That is the basis of Crazy Escape. You control these jeep driving penguins. Can you rescue the sheep, capture all three stars and do so while using as little petrol as possible? It can certainly be a challenge.

Gameplay is as simple as drawing a line on screen. Each level has sections where the road can start or end. You can take as much time as you like to plan your route but once you start drawing, you must commit to the road you're creating, while grabbing all the sheep, and hopefully all the stars. This becomes more problematic as the head wolf starts chasing after your jeep, and that he often drags a sheep behind him, so you have to start doubling back on your route. It's little additions like this every so many levels that keep the game interesting, especially when the basic goal is so simple. Trophies are awarded upon level's end depending on how much road you've drawn (less is more in this case), with missed stars detracting from the ever elusive gold.

The game features a very crisp, colorful, and cartoony art style with everything simply presented and easily recognized. The menu music is pleasant and folksy, and the ambient sound effects during the levels are well done, but the cheers upon level completion start grating after the first couple stages.

With over ninety levels plus bonus stages combined with the byte sized content of each one, what we have here is a game that can be played with a minute to spare, that will last you more than your money's worth. Crazy Escape is simple, clever, and fun, and should merit a try from iPhone gamers.
