The politics of the ancient world are always good fodder for gaming, mainly due to the main solution to the problems of two nations in that day was to go to war with each other. Tiny Token Empires makes light of these global conflicts in a turn based strategy game that meshes risk, puzzle quest, and the base building of the real time strategy genre.

There are two main screens a player will become familiar with over the course of the game. There is the combat screen, and the over-world. Both require movement by dragging tokens and tapping on menus. The dragging is where things go awry. It's hard enough getting the game to register that you want to move a particular token, but then the area you want to drop that unit in will sometimes not recognize your finger over it. The combat screen is puzzle quest. You swap gems to create rows of three or more of the same gem to earn health, power, and other perks. Once you've filled a unit's turn gauge, you can spend a turn sending them to attack, which will hopefully either destroy your enemy, or put a dent in their ranks.

Aside from combat, you'll be taking over neighboring nations for gold and artifacts, while upgrading your bases to provide defense, and the buildings required to build certain types of army personal (which each army token can have any combination of five). Each mission comes with primary and secondary objectives, as well as a humorous narrative lampooning the cultures and characters of the time.

As a strategy game, there's a lot of meat here. Not just the amount of content in terms of levels and difficulties (which sadly has to be unlocked via pay wall), but the different combinations of army, the base building, and the inclusion of artifacts all make for an experience that should keep strategy fans busy for quite a while.
