If we had to describe Naughty Kitties in a pithy phrase, I guess we'd called it a 'tower-defence endless-flyer.'  And, by smushing these seemingly disconnected genres together, Coconut Island Games has created an exciting, fast-paced strategy title.

As with all endless-style games, the goal of Naughty Kitties is to travel as far as possible to earn experience and climb the leaderboard. In Naughty Kitties however, you are asked not  to guide your avatar past obstacles, but to protect an aircraft from incoming attacks. The longer you keep your airplane safe - or at least airborne - the further you will travel.

Despite being framed as an endless-flyer, the gameplay itself is more akin to a tower-defence game. This is where the titular kitties come into play, as each of your craft's defenders is a cute but deadly feline. Your first aircraft has space for three of these cat-shaped turrets, with later upgrades allowing you to add more.

Before embarking – or should that be em-meowing – on a run you have to select which cats to take with you. Some deal direct damage to oncoming enemies; others deliver status effects; and a few even repair your damaged craft. As a result, careful charater selection is key to success.

You have a constant queue of your cats ready to deploy at any one time. However, the trick is learning when to deploy them. Filling every available space on your ship with the same kitty gives that class a boost, but limits your tactical options. Finding the balance between classes is what the game is all about.

Naughty Kitties has its fair share of micro-transactions that allow you to purchase more playtime, and expedite the upgrade process of your ship and cats. Fortunately - as long as it you are playing casually - the energy allowance is generous enough to give you a good number of runs each day with a skilled player able to earn their desired upgrades organically.

Naughty Kitties is a nice twist on both the endless-flyer and tower-defense genres. With a free-to-play model that doesn't dramatically restrict play, you can enjoy its catty antics for days until the urge to invest finally sets in.
