GASP! What's this? A Superman game that isn't an abysmal failure of form and function? We here at Appspy are as surprised as you are! Let's face it, the man of steel has not had good representation in the videogame arena over the years. It's a shame too, as with a character who possesses such power and speed, there could be some great gameplay possibilities. While not delivering the answer to the prayers of those looking for the Superman equivalent of an Arkham Asylum, DC Comics have created a serviceable experience that should please most who play it.

Lex Luthor has created a satellite that he claims will help monitor the weather over Metropolis and keep the ills of modern mother nature from wrecking havoc upon the city. You don't have to be a genius to know he's got ulterior motives, and Clark Kent is way ahead of you. With this setup the game offers eighteen levels with variations on the same type of gameplay. Superman is given a section of Metropolis that he can run and fly around in (and even travel into space above). Each level introduces more problems that you have to help Superman solve, from running down bank robbers, to putting out fires, to destroying Lex's army of killer death machines. Once a combination of these dangers are taken care of the level ends with the alert of a new threat. Upon vanquishing it, you are given a score and a bronze, silver, or gold medal for your efforts.

One thing this game gets really right are the controls. It is such a joy to fly around the city or run into back robbers at top speed as Superman. This game gives you that feeling of empowerment. Sure at high speeds your aim may be a little off when trying to plow through robots, or aim your heat vision, but for the most part, the game has an auto aim system to help you out when you're close to an objective. Most of the game the camera is zoomed out so Superman is represented as a small figure running and flying in blue and red. This works, but can make attacking enemies a problem when they're so small on the screen.

While the wave format of the levels gets repetitive rather quickly, flying around the city as Superman is just fun. It's almost worth the price of admission alone and it will be interesting to see what DC does game wise with their other comic properties on the iphone in the future.
