Final Fantasy creator goes free-to-play with his next game Terra Battle

The acclaimed designer and director of the Final Fantasy franchise, Hironobu Sakaguchi is going free-to-play with his upcoming mobile RPG Terra Battle. Coming from a translated Famitsu article, information on Terra Battle is still a little sparse. While it is being built around a free-to-play model, it is designed to be completable without having to spend any penny - providing you have the patients and time. In the article Sakaguchi also cryptically states that he is hoping to work in collaboration with other game creators on the project. Though it is unclear exactly what this means we would not be adverse to paying for guest director quests that spin-off from the main tale. As wel…

Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril has just assembled on the App Store

It may have been some time in coming, but the iOS port of last year’s Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril is finally here. The game’s original story has Lego Loki joining forces with a gang of Marvel villains in order to destroy the Earth. Drawing in dozens of characters from the comic-book universe, this tale of villainy provides the perfect excuse for the game’s cast of over 90 different playable characters. For this port Warner Bros has offered you the choice of touchscreen or traditional ‘console’ controls, letting you pick the play style that suits you. So, whether you are playing the powerful Hulk, the stretchy Mr Fantastic, or the flaming flyer…

World of Tanks Blitz to invade App Stores globally in two weeks

World of Tanks Blitz was soft-launched on selected App Stores last month. Since then we have been awaiting news of a worldwide release date. Now we have one: June 26th. Developer Wargaming’s incredibly popular free-to-play tank game World of Tanks first made a name for itself on PC and Xbox, before making the move to iOS in the form of World of Tanks Blitz.  The mobile MMO allows up to seven players to join forces to battle other teams in large arenas. Rather than rolling in guns blazing, however, every player has to expertly play their part if their team is to have any chance of success. From speedy light weight scout machines to the heavily armoured super tanks, World…

Drawn to Life Review

Drawn to Life was a originally released back in 2007 on DS. It was based around the tantalising idea of letting you draw characters and items directly into a game world. Seven years on, the game has now made its way on to the App Store. All this port delivers, however, is proof that some things are best left in the past. Despite the fact that creation is the the game's main hook, it is a limited mechanic. Each of your creations must conform to a specific size and shape, limiting your…

Gravity-inverting platformer VVVVVV is on its way to the App Store

Developer Terry Cavanagh's gravity-defying platformer VVVVVV is finally making its way to iOS. According to the developer's blog, the iOS port of his retro platformer has actually been 90% complete for some time, he just hadn't gotten around to perfecting the touchscreen controls. In a platformer an exacting as VVVVVV, controls could make or break a port. The video below shows that we probably shouldn’t worry, however, as Terry shows off the new interface through one of the hardest sections of the game, Veni, Vidi, Vici. VVVVVV is just about ready to be submitted for App Store approval, so we can expect more news, and a release date, in the near future.…

CCG tower defence game Defenders is out now on the App Store

Nival’s take on the tower defence genre, Defenders, has just made the jump from PC to iOS. Adding a collectible card game element to the standard tower defence gameplay, Defenders has you build and customise a selection of towers over 23 levels. You collect cards - and in turn towers - by completing levels. You can also choose to fuse cards you are not using, creating towers with new abilities. All of the original PC game's visual and audio seems to be present in this port. This means on smaller screens that the combat can become quite busy. Luckily, a pinch of the screen will zoom you into the action to ensure that you aren't accidentally throwing up towers in the wrong places. P…

Adventure classic Another World on sale for 69p / 99c

There are few games as aptly named as Delphine Software's Another World. This slice of gaming history may be 23 years old, but  remains an fondly remembered classic - one which you can now pick up for 69p / 99c on your iPhone or iPad. When it was first released on Amiga and Atari ST in 1991, Another World transported early gamers to a polygonal world beyond their imagination. Looking at the original now this seems laughable, but the cinematic story remains a fantastic tale of friendship and adventure. Bulkypix's 2011 iOS port adds a new coat of paint to the alien worlds. This brings texture and depth to the old polygons, breathing new life into the classic game. The port shows…

Mad Catz unveils new C.T.R.L.i iOS 7 controller at Mobile World Congress

For a long time, Mad Catz has been known as one of the leading manufacturers of joysticks, headphones, keyboards, and gamepads. Now, at the Mobile World Congress, the company announced that it has created its first iOS 7 compatible controller - the C.T.R.L.i. Yes, we know it's a silly name. But the C.T.R.L.i's chassis has a fantastic pedigree, lifting its design directly from Mad Catz Xbox 360 acclaimed MLG Pro Circuit controller. Providing there are no changes to this core design, the new pad should have a great build quality and responsive keys – though its size could be a worry for on-the-go gamers. If its size doesn't put you off, there are a number of changes to the pad in its…

Classic Japanese adventure novel Banshee's Last Cry comes to iOS as a free download

When you think of Japanese games, the first genre that usually jumps to mind is the traditional RPG. But the country also has a love of interactive novels. Though these text adventures are rarely released in the west, Aksys Games' latest release brings a classic of the genre, Banshee's Last Cry, to iOS for free. First published in 1994 by Chunsoft on the SNES, Banshee's Last Cry was one of Japan's first sound novels. Its popularity has seen it released on multiple platforms within the country, and now, after twenty years, Aksys Games has released an English translation on iOS. Playing very similarly to a choose-your-own-adventure book, the game charges you with solving a grizzly murder in…
