Sega’s super Sonic summer sale

Sega has dropped the price of three Sonic The Hedgehog titles on the App Store. Sonic The Hedgehog starts off this sale. Sega’s original super-speed platformer has the pointy hero rescuing his friends from the evil Dr Robotnik. Reimagined for iOS with touchcontrols and new playable characters, we thought this was a good interpretation of the Mega Drive / Genesis classic when we tried in back in 2009. Next up is Sonic The Hedgehog 2. This sequel does little to change the highspeed formula, with Sonic once again doing battle with Dr Robotnik. Originally, however, Sonic 2 did introduce the wonderfully named Miles Prower (a.k.a. Tails) to the world - for which we are forever grate…

Sega’s Dragon Coins mixes monster training with penny shove combat

Sega’s new free-to-play game Dragon Coins takes the monster training mechanics from Pokemon, and adds combat based on coin-dozer arcade machines. Its an odd combination, but play a little and it starts to make sense. You take a team of five monsters into battle, each of whom sits under one of the five lanes down which coins can be nudged. Dropping coins in the top of the coin dozer pushes the existing penny pile forward, causing some to fall into the monster channels, and the monster to attack. Much like the arcade machines Dragon Coins mimics, this leads to an addictive mix of tactics and luck during battles. Collecting different coloured coins has different effects. For example,…

Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed goes free-to-play on the App Store

Sega’s mascot-filled Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed has just removed its 69p / 99c entry fee, letting you get its freemium-styled content for, well, free. The shift to free isn’t completely out of the goodness of Sega’s heart of course. Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed is a fun racer that let you whizz around iconic locations from various Sega franchises. Speeding through gates transforms your kart into a new type of vehicle depending on the terrain ahead. You'll transform into a speedboat to skipping across the waves, and morph into…
