Transworld Endless Skater Review

Transworld Endless Skater Review

The Tony Hawk series popularised the skateboarding genre back on the original Playstation. It's twitch-based gameplay made it perfect chasing high scores with friends, but proved difficult to replicate on touchscreen. Transworld Endless Skater has taken that trick-fueled formula and strapped on a unique control system to create a skateboarding endless runner. Once rolling, your skater moves forward automatically. You can switch between three lanes by swiping the bottom-left of th…

Upcoming CCG Assassin’s Creed Memories lets you hop through history

Ubisoft has joined forces with Gree and PlayNext to deliver an all new free-to-play installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise: a CCG called Assassin’s Creed Memories. Digital card-battling has been increasing in popularity recently. The genre’s ability to mix the card combat with RPG leveling and strategic elements have sucked players in, while the booster-pack IAPs have attracted publishers and developers. Ubisoft seems to be planning to tap directly into this popularity, utilising its Assassin’s Creed franchise as the foundation. Inviting you into a new mobile Animus, you have to travel through history with the aim of building a powerful guild, recruitin…

Chillingo is releasing base building strategy game Gang of Pirates later this year

Chilllingo is partnering with Nitro Games to bring a new social strategy game called Gang of Pirates to the App Store later this year. The premise for Gang of Pirates will be more than familiar to veterans of Clash of Clans and Boom Beach - though with some rum-swilling nautical debauchery added to the mix. You must build a stronghold on an island of pirates, and developing your base lets you better train and deck out your seafaring troops. Building your defences better fortifies the settlement. That whole thing. Once you're happy with your fortress, its time to attack your unfortunate island neighbours. Sending your fleet to battle other players switches the game to a tactical battle v…

Free-to-play action RPG Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is running wild on the App Store

Gamevil’s anime-styled action RPG Kritika: Chaos Unleashed has just been launched on the App Store. This free-to-play RPG takes the emphasis away from in-depth story telling and shifts it squarely onto combat. Battling enemies and bosses in tight arenas, the action is fast and frantic, with your characters hacking and slashing their way through all in their path. When you aren’t fighting, its time to visit the workshop where you can sharpen your skills and enchant your weapons to increase your chances in battle. Just in case you begin to tire of the main quest, then Kritika also provides two additional modes. Monster Wave is an endless string of battles for you to engag…

Trials Frontier receives a new island in its latest update

Redlynx’s free-to-play iPhone interpretation of its Trials franchise, Trials Frontier, has just been given a huge update that adds an extra track-filled island to the game. This new landmass is named Reaper’s Finger and is not for the faint of heart. Designed for fans of the game who have been demanding more challenge, the six tracks contained on it are intended to test all of your skills. Another huge addition to the game is control customisation. The already responsive interface now allows you to reposition its four control buttons anywhere around the screen. This should let experts carve an extra few seconds off their time or - if you’re anything like us - help you g…

Sonic Jump Fever is leaping onto the App Store this Thursday

Sega’s spiky blue hero is about to make yet another journey to the App Store, in upcoming free-to-play leaper Sonic Jump Fever. In fact, Sonic Jump Fever is a revamp of the 2012 game Sonic Jump, which thrust the speedy hedgehog into vertical leaping levels akin to Doodle Jump. This new free-to-play take on the concept has you focus on leaderboards and score attacks. You must race against the clock to scale each level's dizzying heights - collecting coins along the way - as you try and beat your friends' highscores, and compete on the Game Center leaderboards. It is free-to-play of course, so you can expect plenty of purchasables to help your ascent. We just hope that this won…

Final Fantasy creator goes free-to-play with his next game Terra Battle

The acclaimed designer and director of the Final Fantasy franchise, Hironobu Sakaguchi is going free-to-play with his upcoming mobile RPG Terra Battle. Coming from a translated Famitsu article, information on Terra Battle is still a little sparse. While it is being built around a free-to-play model, it is designed to be completable without having to spend any penny - providing you have the patients and time. In the article Sakaguchi also cryptically states that he is hoping to work in collaboration with other game creators on the project. Though it is unclear exactly what this means we would not be adverse to paying for guest director quests that spin-off from the main tale. As wel…

World of Tanks Blitz Review

At its most reductive, World of Tank Blitz is a modern interpretation of the Atari classic Combat. But this mobile instalment the of tank-based arena warfare behemoth bring flair - and considerate monetisation - to the formula. A quick tutorial teaches you nuances of manoeuvring your metal death-machine using the virtual stick, buttons, and various drop down menus. It is a familiar system, but one made unique thanks to your tanks methodical pace and cumbersome turning circle. Th…

Supernauts Review

Where Supernauts differs from other free-to-play world-building games like Clash of Clans or The Sims Freeplay, is that it doesn’t constrain your creativity with set structures. Instead it lets you make whatever you desire on your tiny world from a series of blocks, essentially taking the freedom of Minecraft, and applying it in a free-to-play context. The game takes place on an asteroid. Controlling your Supernaut you use the "zapper" - a device with a wonderfully '70…

World of Tanks Blitz has just rolled onto iPhone and iPad

Having been soft-launched in selected territories a number of weeks ago, World of Tanks Blitz is now available in App Stores everywhere. If you're not familiar, World of Tanks Blitz is Wargaming’s iOS interpretation of its incredibly popular PC and Xbox free-to-play MMO World of Tanks.  However, this seven-on-seven tank combat game is not a straight port of the original series. Wargaming has created it from the ground up for touchscreen, and optimised the historically-inspired military battles mobile online play. Though it is free-to-play, World of Tanks Blitz doesn't feature timers or energy systems. Instead, in-app purchases allow you to buy and upgrade the game's…

Major Magnet: Arcade is coming to the App Store next week

Pagoda West Games has announced that its new game Major Magnet: Arcade will be coming to the App Store next week. When the original Major Magnet was released last year we found ourselves attracted to its orbiting 2D gameplay. It involves swinging and flinging the titular Major around the screen using the power of magnetism. What made the it even more special was the its vivid 16-bit visuals and chirpy chiptune music, both of which reminded us of some of Sonic the Hedgehog’s best levels. The Major’s return looks to be more of an evolution than a revolution, however. As the trailer shows, the magnetic mechanics have returned. These let you sling the hero through each stag…

Halfbrick’s new match-three puzzler Birzzle Fever is out now

Halfbrick Publishing has just released its latest free-to-play title on the App Store, the fast paced puzzler Brizzle Fever. This classic match-three puzzler will be familiar to anyone who has played Bejewelled. A grid of colourful birds greet you when you begin. Tapping on any bird that is touching two or more similarly colored friends makes them burst into a shower of feathers, and new birds flap into replace them. To spice things up, developer Enfeel has added time pressures. With each round playing out over a single minute you must be fast to rack up those high-scores. To further emphasise this focus on speed you also earn extra points the faster you link chains together. The more co…

E3 2014: Hands-on with Mech, the online arena-based robo-battler

Chillingo announced its team-based eight-on-eight robotic deathmatch game Mech earlier this week. Just a few short days later we got our hands on the game itself, courtesy of the Chillingo booth at E3. Mech draws heavily on the ethos of huge robot simulation series Mech-Warrior, so fans of these PC classics should feel quite at home with the new title. This is still a very early build of the game, with a lot of kinks still being hammered out by developer Small Impact Games. With a lot of polish still being added, nothing is final, but Peter does get a chance to find out how controlling a large robot will work on a touch screen, and how the team hopes to implement its free-to-play mod…

Angry Birds Epic Review

Angry Birds Epic Review

At this point the Angry Birds are more than just feathery projectiles in a physics puzzler. They have become icons that can leap into any medium they choose. Like Mario before them, their first step was into the world of kart racing, and now they have progressed to a strategy RPG with the turn-based Angry Birds Epic. To keep things easy for genre first-timers, Epic does away with exploration of similar titles. Instead it adopts a map that will be familiar to free-to-play fans, with fi…
