PROS

  • Sometimes the level design promotes strategic gameplay.
  • The music is memorable.

CONS

  • Having to tap on the screen to shoot obscures your vision leading to errors of judgment.
  • While satisfying, the missile is pretty much an “I win” button.
  • The sound can take a while to pop in after a level loads.

VERDICT

Tank Riders tries to blend action and strategy amongst some interesting level design. It partially succeeds.

Tank Riders gives the impression of a game from a by-gone era. Some of you will remember such strategic action games like Herzog Zwei and Return Fire, which really were more action than strategy. Whether it's clearing the level of enemies or simply getting to the exit, Tank Riders has the same vibe as you tread around the landscape and blast the holy balls out of the opposition.

The tank is controlled by an arcade stick at the bottom left of the screen. It turns invisible when not pressed but trust us, it's there. Firing is taken care of by tapping where you want your shot to land. This creates complications as your right hand can obscure the screen while you're trying to maneuver and fire at the same time. To avoid this complication, it's often best to let an enemy in on your presence and then take strategic cover around a corner and wait for them to foolishly wander over.

The levels sport some catchy tunes and the art style is blocky yet colorful, and it's this choice that invites comparisons to the predecessors of this game style.

Along with the single player campaign, there is a multiplayer mode. This is almost the better option as all players will have the same control disadvantage. Still, the single player has some well designed levels, and the glee of the missile power-up should provide some chuckles. This title's certainly not for everyone but those who click with what it has to offer will find an enjoyable tanking experience.
