July has brought us some interesting games to look at, though despite having some hotly anticipated releases, it has been quite hard to dig through and find the titles that truly shine. This has been made harder still thanks to the return of Dave Flodine as a reviewer, but only because I had to play each game again to bring the list down to its final order. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, especially when we're talking about the Top 3 iPhone Games for July 2011.
3. Gesundheit! (Konami)
Being set within a charming, children's book inspired world is just one of the many appealing features of Gesundheit! by Konami, but most importantly the challenge of not only surviving, but perfecting each level will keep you coming back for more. It doesn't take much effort to control your cute snot-nosed piggy, but there's no standing still when monsters are chasing after you, so you'll need to think before you make your move.
2. Groove Coaster (TAITO)
It should be no surprise to find out that those who worked on TAITO's earlier release of Space Invaders Infinity Gene had a hand in the development of Groove Coaster. In what is essentially a rhythm game, players find themselves subjected to visual tricks that distract and disorient. From its trancy beats to its abstract wireframe designs, it's a class act that will keep your feet and fingers tapping.
1. Qvoid (Gavina Games)
Qvoid by Gavina Games has to be considered the best find of the month as it not only manages to produce a puzzle challenge that's brain-tickling, but it also manages to package it in a simple, yet beautifully elegant way. The soft palette and sharp 3D designs are paired with cute touches like an animated 'face' and rewind effects that encourage, rather than discourage players to play around. Despite the simple concept, Qvoid manages to mix up the puzzles by focusing on the main problem you face (that of moving around), keeping things fresh until the end.
As usual there's a few more titles worth checking out if you're after a few more mid-year stocking stuffers. Games such as the arcade-puzzler Async Corp, the abstract Deflex and the rare-jousting-themed Shake Spears! all make for great distractions that may have you scratching your head in thought or confusion.
