What’s New

Version 1.0.17

FEATURES
- Black Screen Prevention on iOS | Axis & Allies 1942 Online on iOS will now use Minimal High Quality Sprites by default: only unit icon sprites will be used on the game & combat boards. The setting (which players can find & tweak to their liking in Graphics -> Image Content And Resolution) will hopefully mitigate black screens and constant reloading. The Use Minimal Resources setting will also cause no animations and unit icon sprites only, but at a lower resolution than default

- New Defense Profiles | You can now pick from new options of Defense Profiles for Submarines and Destroyers! Differentiate between lone Subs and Subs with a fleet when
automatically submerging, or select the last defending Destroyer to be preserved in an encounter with attacking Subs

FIXES
- Game History now shows players who forfeited in Custom games
- Purchase Panel and Map Notes should be more accessible on mobile devices with unusual screen resolutions
- Fixed an incorrect error message when attempting to move a transport to a non-hostile sea zone in the Combat Move phase
- Fixed The Victory Cities text in the Help More Victory City list section
- More crash fixes

Stability

This has so much potential!! If it didn’t crash so often it would be a solid 5 stars. Bottom line is it crashes a solid 50% of the time as you transition into the battle view. Most of the time you can restart and “more slowly” do the battle, other times you just can’t proceed with the game as the battle conditions itself has some problems. The same game/battle on my laptop is 100% stable (it shares your online profile between phone and computer), so I know it’s just a problem with phones.

Developers, if it helps: it was still flaky but much less so with my older iPhone XS Max. When I got the iPhone 13 Pro Max it’s really bad - so it seems like there’s some kind of timing issue happening the faster the processor is.

Please please please fix the constant crashes going into battles!! It’s a gorgeous game with awesome ease of use and as I mentioned above, so much potential! It would be my go-to mobile game if it was stable. Thanks in advance!

I want to rate higher, but I can’t.

I really don’t like that I have to be so negative here, I want to rave about how great this is, but I can’t. This game is literally unplayable. Tutorial? Game loads, then freezes on black screen. Single player against computer? Game loads, then freezes on black screen. I’ve tried axis and ally factions, same problem. Only time the game works is in hot seat mode. (I haven’t tried online against other players yet, I’m afraid of eating a slot in someone’s game and just being able to never play my turn due to the above described black screen issue). I know we’ve got Christmas and New Years here, and I understand y’all (the devs) are busy with family and friends, rightfully so, but as soon as the holidays are over, please fix ASAP, I want to rate this game highly, but I just can’t in its current state.

Update: I’ve discovered I have 0 issues running the game on my old, 5th gen iPad. The issues I described above persist on my iPhone 13 pro. I followed the recommendation of lowering the performance, and I can at least access all game modes now; however, it’s still a common occurrence to have to force quit the game 3-7 times per PHASE of a turn because it freezes, or goes into a loading cycle that leads no where. As soon as this game is as useful on my iPhone as it is my iPad, I will absolutely bump my review up.

Very well done

The UI enhancements made on both the iPad version and the latest Mac/PC version have made the game much easier to play. It is now much easier to move units by transports in all the ways allowed by the rules. The game plays very fast with smooth animations on my 2018 iPad Pro. The AI is “good enough” but not great. It does some boneheaded moves fairly often, but also sometimes surprises you with something unexpected.

However the game is really meant to be played against other humans and in this respect it really shines with the ability to leave messages for your allies in the game, review previous player turns, and rock-solid cloud syncing. This is is one of the best board game ports that I’ve seen.

I like the fact that they offer the Larry Harris Gencon starting option, in fact this was essential as the basic 1942 start favors the Axis far too much. What I would like to see in the future are additional starting layouts, maybe even different start years, to add some variety to the game. This would help keep the game fresh for veteran players.
