I originally switched from Adobe because I couldn't justify the price for something I only used a few times a month.
Switching was awkward as I learned the tiny ways that Designer is different from Illustrator. But once I learned, I think that in most cases Designer has a better way of handling those subtle UI areas.
Now that I've gotten used to it, I LOVE it. Instead of just using it once in a while when I "needed" too like with Illustrator, I enjoy drawing more in Designer and use it all the time.
Interestingly, I have it on both desktop and iPad and use it differenty in both places. I draw with it much more on the iPad and use the desktop version for more precision or "graphic design" work. Mostly the choice comes down to screen size but also because it's just more fun to draw on the iPad version.
The most recent update includes a killer feature for me. DWG support. As an architect, my world revolves around CAD and BIM formats and I've always wanted a lightweight, graphic friendly program for creating content to bring into my work (but is still powerful and reliable). Designer is powerful and reliable and now I can draw content like logo's, people, or trees on my iPad and bring them into my drawings in a way I've dreamt of for 30 years.

My Go-To Vector App
I've been a marketer and graphic designer for a decade and I always loved the giant-that-will-not-be-named's apps. Their entire suite is great, right? But, ever since I first purchased Affinity Designer (and Photo, and Publisher), I have completely changed over my workflows to Affinity products.
Even when I have both apps on my desktop, I still find myself choosing Designer over AI. I know of no higher a complement to make.
There are still frustrations, though minor, and these apps are mature enough and have a large enough following now (vs. when they first came out) that any question I might have is quickly and properly answered.
Most of all, I appreciate their business model: charge for a major release, but not a subscription. It works way better for an occasional user and frankly better for those like me who use the tools often enough but the designs are not the bread and butter of their business, just secondary, though critical, pieces of it.
Very buggy and difficult to use
Software has great set of features for a reasonable price, but unfortunately it is extremely buggy and at times insanely difficult to use. For example, if you want to resize a page it will not let you use a custom size that is different from your current aspect ratio. If you try to set a new size it will force the other dimension to preserve the same aspect ratio. If you look online there are long pages of tips of how to do a page resize, something that should be extremely simple to do (and is simple in every other program I have ever used). In this case you have to create a new document with the correct size and copy everything over. This is just one example. This is NOT the software you want to be using when you have an upcoming deadline.
