Description

Find haiku in classic stories of the West

Haikuna is a 3D word search game set in three classic books of the West: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Don Quixote. Players search these stories for translated poems written variously during the Nanbokucho, Edo, Genroku, and Meji periods of Japan*.

Magic is enabled by clearing the current map of visible yōkai, and more magic options become available as the player advances.

Hidden yōkai, like the minogame, must be avoided or the player faces temporal distortions that inhibit game play. Hidden yōkai start to show up after the players complete several levels, and clicking on any word that is not a haiku word runs the risk of encountering them.

Clicking on the Help symbol in the upper right (?) during the game will bring up a dialog of information and a dropdown control within it that can be used to switch between topics.

Several aspects of the game can be toggled on or off, depending on player preference. Players should click on the gear icon in the upper right to access these options:

Dark (default: on) - Render the game in dark theme
Music (default: on) - Play with soundtrack
Effects (default: on) - Play sound effects
Voice (default: on) - Play vocal utterances
Background (default: on) - Display Japanese words in the background
Easy (default: off) - Greatly reduce the number of yōkai in upper levels
Lightning (default: on) - Perform the "lightning" flash effect
Timer (default: on) - Display time elapsed during game play
Tooltips (default: on) - Show hints when hovering over certain user interface elements
