Sometimes it's frustrating to find that a new App that strives to be more than just a simple mechanic palmed off as the entire game itself. Funkyball Worlds by Handmark is a stand-out from the most other physics-based platformers thanks to its charming elegance that makes it easy to pick up and play, but hard to put down.
The trick to Funkyball is all in the friction. Levels consist of a series of platforms that need to be navigated while avoiding traps as you charge your way to the goal. Friction plays a big part in maintaining control as your ball keeps its spin in the air making it harder to brake on the next platform. There are touch-based controls for those not comfortable with tilting their device, but this is more of a concession to some gamers with the tilt-controls being far more intuitive to grasp.
Funkyball uses a clean, bold cartoon-ish 2D art style and simple special effects. There are two graphical quality settings, with the lowest setting turning off background effects and the glowing effect on the ball. Each of the three available worlds turns up the difficulty and adds new complexities to the physics such as wind and low-friction platforms and keeps the game fresh.
Thankfully each world only has 24 levels as the gameplay can slowly feel repetitive, but mixing up levels can keep you entertained for much longer. Funkyball Worlds is the definition of elegance with its simple and perfectly executed gameplay which will appeal to just about any casual gamer.
What you see is what you get with Funkyball Worlds - it's an elegant physics platformer that's pretty to watch and fun to finish.
