The United Nations Ozone Secretariat is releasing a new mobile game next month called Reset Earth, which is being created to teach children and adolescents about the important role the ozone layer plays in protecting the planet.

Reset Earth is a singleplayer platform game combining retro graphics with hand-drawn art in which you switch between multiple characters and utilise their unique abilities in four levels that explore the effects of climate change and significance of the ozone layer. Through unlocking puzzles and beating levels, you will learn about ecological history and the science behind how we protect the planet.

The Reset Earth platform isn’t just a game, however. It’s also released as a short animation film which also explores the options we have for collective positive action. The plot of the film continues in interactive form when the mobile game launches next month. You can watch the film in its entirely for free below.

The ozone layer is a vital natural tool that regulates the planet’s temperature. Ozone-depleting substances account for 11% of total warming emissions to date, and global communities have worked towards protecting the ozone layer by banning or restricting these substances. Experts reckon the world will gradually heal from this damage over the course of the next century.

“The protection of the ozone layer cannot be considered a done deal,” says Meg Seki from the Ozone Secretariat. “It must be a continuous effort by us and by future generations. If our children learn about the grim consequences of a ruined ozone layer through a fantasy cartoon and game app, they will be aware of its importance and protect it.”

Reset Earth is coming to mobile devices next month on 10th February. The short film is available to watch above, or by going to the official website for the project.
