Netflix has teamed up with BAFTA-award-winning studio ustwo games to announce the exclusive release of Desta: The Memories Between on mobile for Netflix subscribers. A PC and console release will follow in the coming months but right now only mobile players can experience the deep new story from ustwo.

Desta: The Memories Between is a heavily character-driven game, told from the point of view of the eponymous hero, Desta, who is ustwo games' first non-binary protagonist. Each night when they sleep, Desta arrives in a strange dream world that is filled with the fractured remnants of past locations, old friends and influences, with glowing orbs serving as guides.

The gameplay is a heady mix of rogue-like, turn-based tactical dodgeball action, which is a fairly unique sounding genre. To progress the story, Desta must engage in a ball game of sorts, teaming up with a host of characters and unlocking new abilities for different strategies. As interesting as the gameplay sounds, the real draw appears to be the story itself.

Through Desta’s eyes, players will go through a story that follows a theme of self-awareness, with the story will taking a wide look at the subject of identity, including gender identity, sexuality and queer relationships. Even though these will no doubt be sensitive subjects for some, ustwo has said the key takeaways will be positive and joyful, but hopefully not enough to cheapen the message.

When discussing the new game, ustwo's Chief Creative Officer, Danny Gray, said: “This is an exciting new avenue for us, giving players the opportunity to grow and engage with Desta in a meaningful way over the coming months. We look forward to taking players even further into Desta’s dreams”.

Desta: The Memories Between is available now on the App Store and Google Play for those with an active subscription to Netflix.
