Clowns, whatever you're position on them as entertainers, are typically associated with fairly surreal situations. If you could slip in to the dreams of a clown after a big successful show near the seaside, you might just find a resemblance to Russ Kumro's latest App, Burple Fish.
Should you be fascinated enough to delve in to the halls of madness, you'll be confronted by a simple premise: Get your fish to the ocean without him exploding from built up 'gas'. As you fall from the sky you can tilt to bounce off objects which cause your fish to expel the gas as burps while spikes provide obstacles that add to your pressure. There's not a lot of complexity in the gameplay, but as levels progress you'll find spikes harder to avoid and gas building up alarmingly quickly.
Most of the artwork is hand drawn and extremely well detailed, but don't expect much animation. While there's not much variation in the sprites, the levels do use large and varied backgrounds. The music is strangely appropriate, being a mix between 'old west' meets 'county fair' and starts to become truly surreal as your fish attempts to ram balloons while equipped with rainbow hair.
Burple Fish is a fascinating experiment, but more than a bit thin on the gameplay to be enjoyable or replayable.
You'll get some uncomfortable laughs for your first play through of Burple Fish, but it's true value is in seeing your friends faces as they try to play it.
