Red Bull BC One Game Review

Whether or not you're in to the B-Boy scene, watching professional dancers whipping up a flurry of agile moves is easy to appreciate and Red Bull Championship BC One by Digital Chocolate attempts to bring the best of this dance style to the App Store. However, it might be a bit of a stretch to call BC One an 'authentic dance game' as it's really just a straight rhythm game, but a good one none-the-less.

Players need to tap out a tune matching rhythm by using four colored buttons on the bottom of the screen, causing their selected B-Boy to dance in time with the beat. 'Holds' where a tap is extended for a set period are also included, however in an original touch the two buttons on each side of the screen can slide between each other for some complex maneuvers. New locations on the map are unlocked after participating in four matches including a final round, also unlocking a new B-Boy to play in the process.

The character designs aren't overly detailed and matching the in-game versions of each B-Boy to their real life counterpart is only really possible if you're familiar with their dance style and usual attire. Similarly, while the locations differ depending on what country you're in, it's fairly superficial as they all amount to a basic backdrop with lights and a floor space for your dancer.

Finishing Red Bull Championship BC One is fun the first time through, however outside of achievements there's no incentive to come back for more as the game doesn't list songs by name and players will have to rummage through levels to memorize which stages they enjoy replaying. BC One may have the right stuff to become a solid rhythm game for the App Store, but if you're after a compelling dance simulator you'll be sorely out of luck.
