Super Mecha Champions' Christmas update adds new character Mila

NetEase's fun, anime-inspired Super Mecha Champions has added a new character as part of its latest update. Mila is voiced by Yui Makino of Gundam Build Fighters Try and Tsubasa Chronicle fame. Sure, she might not appear particularly threatening, but she packs a devastating punch with her heavy armour mecha by her side. The Christmas update turns the SMC battlefield into a winter wonderland. The Caramel and Doomlight are now looking all festive, and you can also expect to see new skins for Mira and Joanna. The biggest addition here might be the new Training Ground mode. This lets you get some pre-battle training in using any of the mechas, guns, or weapons you want. It gives you a chanc…

Ten great games you might have missed in 2019 (part 2)

This here is part 2 of our "ten great games you might have missed in 2019" feature. Here's part 1 in case you missed it. Astrologaster Astrologaster is among the most unique and surprisingly funny games of 2019. It tells the tale of real-life occultist Simon Foreman, who attempted to diagnose and cure old-timey London residents of their various ailments using astrology. Its choice-based gameplay is simple and fun, but it's the writing and voice acting that makes Astrologaster an easy recommendation. Knights and Slimes Knight and Slimes is a smart roguelike platformer which takes the humble slime and turns it into one of the best video game enemies of the year. Hitting a slime with your…

Ten great games you might have missed in 2019 (part 1)

With everyone and their gran now putting out GOTY lists, I think it's a great time to shine a spotlight on some titles that many might have missed during what was a terrific year for mobile gaming. This here is the first of two parts.  Ordia Ordia, the "one-finger flinger", is pretty much the best platformer I've played on mobile all year. It's accessible, challenging when it needs to be, incredibly moreish, and polished to a shine. Here's a brief description I wrote earlier in the year: "As a one-eyed ball of goo, you’ll start out by launching yourself from the bubbling primordial ooze to the endless caverns above. The goal is to continue working your way forever upwards, hop…

Dr. Mario World adds fresh stages and Dr. Dry Bowser

Dr. Mario World has just received a handful of fresh stages and an all-new doctor to play as. You'll now be able to add Dr. Dry Bowser to your staff either by purchasing the limited-time Doctor Pack or clearing the Special Stage in World 10. Red: "Hey! I heard new stages will be added Dec. 26 at 1 AM PT. But, that's not all! The reward for clearing the Special Stage is a new doctor. Who could it be?" #DrMarioWorld pic.twitter.com/Tsblti7AJK — Dr. Mario World (@Drmarioworld_EN) 25 December 2019 The new stages on the overworld are nice and snowy, giving them a light festive theme. One of Dry Bowser's Stage Mode skills allows him to clear 2 rows at random, including objects that r…

Alter Ego is a surprisingly emotional and affecting clicker for iOS and Android

As relaxing and enjoyable as games in the clicker genre can be, it's arguably somewhat rare to find one that has the ability to tell a genuinely engaging and affecting tale. The recently released Alter Ego is an all-too-rare example of a clicker with something special to offer. It mixes basic clicker gameplay with extensive personality tests and a story that shifts and concludes differently depending on your decisions. In order to take a test, you first need to collect EGO by tapping on stray thoughts and feelings, known here as "whispers". Its clicker gameplay is fairly straightforward and accessible. That said, the moment to moment action remains engaging thanks to the excellent score…

Lego Builder's Journey is a surprisingly beautiful and poetic puzzler

Apple Arcade has seen another surprising release this week. Lego Builder's Journey is the latest title to hit the tech behemoth's $4.99-a-month subscription service, and it looks really quite good. From what I've seen, Builder's Journey couldn't be more different than Lego Brawls, which launched onto the service earlier this year. It's "a story about play, connection, and adventure", which sees you crafting elaborate pathways using a mix of creative solutions and handy instructions. Meet @LEGO_Group’s newest adventure: LEGO Builder’s JourneyIn this poetic puzzler, you will build to reach new levels and experiment with breaking rules while enjoying beautiful music.Play it now…

Garena Free Fire's Winterlands event comes bearing tons of new content

Garena Free Fire continues to be one of the biggest and most successful mobile games around. Now, a new event is on its way to help players get into the festive spirit. Winterlands, as it's known, will start by bringing back some of the most popular content from the last year of Free Fire, including skins such as the gingerbread man and polar bear suit, as well as game modes like Cold Steel, Clash Squad, Explosive Jump, and Big Head. Everything I've just listed will only be available for a limited time, so you'll need to be quick. On top of the older content, we'll also see a new holiday theme, new characters, and a new pet. The upcoming Snowman mode will be available to play from Decemb…

Cat Quest II adds a challenging New Game+ mode and a host of great improvements

Cat Quest II has now received a free update that adds an extensive New Game+ mode and makes a number of minor improvements that nevertheless should add some extra polish to the experience. New Game+ is obviously the big new addition here. It basically allows you to restart the game on a higher difficulty mode with all of your old gear, skills, and XP from your original run. Interestingly, you'll be able to increase the difficulty to suit your preference, kicking enemies all the way up to level 999 if you so desire. Another major change comes in the form of improved partner AI when playing solo. For completionists, detailed completion stats for dungeons, items, and quests are now viewable…

Overdrive II, the fast-paced hack 'n' slash, is now available for iOS

Gem Mobile's Overdrive II is a fast-paced, futuristic hack 'n' slash set 100 years after the apocalypse. With its neat sci-fi aesthetic and blistering action, it found plenty of fans when it first launched for Android. Earlier this week, the game finally made its way over to the App Store, allowing iOS players to get involved. While Overdrive II's world might be a post-apocalyptic, its inhabitants are feeling better and stronger than ever. That said, following a rogue AI taking charge of all robots and cyborgs, humans have had quite the struggle on their hands. Thankfully, a legion of ninja warriors has risen to the challenge, pushing back against the robot menace with their incredible comb…

Little White Rocket flies onto Google Play after launching for iOS last month

Little White Rocket first launched for iOS back in November, and now it's made its way over to Google Play. It's said to be an atmospheric and minimalist experience which sees you controlling a little white rocket as it travels the galaxy. Controls here are simple thanks to the one-touch approach to spinning, aiming, and flying. It's not looking to be super challenging; instead, you should expect a more meditative and relaxing time, where a calming sense of adventure meets easy-going puzzles. One of the big draws here is the addition of narrated poems that play out as you explore. These were written by award-winning poet, Laurence O'Dwyer. Developer Macalaus has previous experience worki…

Marvel Contest of Champions adds Fantastic 4's Silver Surfer

Marvel Contest of Champions now boasts one of the largest rosters of Marvel heroes and villains in any game to date. The latest character set to join the collectable brawler is the Silver Surfer. Developer Kabam recently put out an extended cinematic trailer to celebrate the game's 5th anniversary. Turns out the game has done really rather well over this last year, which also happens to have been the year of the Fantastic 4. And so I suppose it was only a matter of time before one of the 4's greatest villains showed up. Silver Surfer's lack of patience will be justified. pic.twitter.com/mlpSGFoJiZ — MarvelChampions (@MarvelChampions) December 12, 2019 In order to save his home…

Marvel Contest of Champions celebrates its 5th anniversary in style with a cinematic trailer that hints at the game's future

Marvel Contest of Champions is celebrating its 5th anniversary in style with a neat cinematic trailer that hints at the future of the game's world and extensive roster of Marvel characters. Contest of Champions launched all the way back in 2014, and since then it's gone from strength to strength. It's now totalled over 2.8 billion hours of play time from over 215 million summoners, with a whopping 70 billion completed fights in total. What's especially impressive is that around 0.8 billion hours of that play time and 31 billion completed fights come from this last year alone. 25 new champions have been added in 2019, bringing the game's total up to an impressive 160 characters. Contest…

Metacritic's top 50 games of the decade is disappointingly light on mobile games

Metacritic's top 50 games of the decade is disappointingly light on mobile games

Metacritic, everyone's favourite film, games, and music aggregator, has now released its top 50 highest-rated games of the decade. Truth be told, there are very few surprises here, though what stands out to me is the complete lack of mobile games. Sure, Journey (number 40) and Inside (number 28) eventually got ported over, but there's not a single entry here that originated from iOS or Android.  Even indie darlings like Monument Valley (Metascore of 89), Florence (Metascore of 82), and The Room (Metascore of 89) don't come particularly close to hitting the 91+ Metascore required to feature here. The thing is that there are mobile games from the past decade with a score that's more than…
