Top 3 iPhone Games for February 2012

By , on March 7, 2012

February has been a surprising month, dishing out titles that were not only unexpected, but astoundingly entertaining. While a few genres were left out of the mix, most gamers were sure to find something they liked over the last month. However as always I'm ready to sift through the month that was and pick out some highlights for you to chew on if you're not distracted by larger titles being released on consoles in March.

This is the Top 3 iOS Games for February, 2012.

Beat Hazard Ultra (Cold Beam Games) $2.99 Univ. (Temporarily on sale for FREE)

Twin-stick shooters had a good run on the iOS platform for a while and despite the genre reaching near saturation, it still ticks along as a great way to kill a spare few minutes on a commute (or wherever you may be). Sadly the music is often repetitive and not everyone is excited about thumping electronica - if only there was a way to play games with your own music and have it truly interact with the world. Oh wait, Beat Hazard Ultra does exactly that and provides oodles of modes with difficulty levels (and control schemes) designed to suit just about anyone. Just be glad I didn't take this opportunity to Rick-Roll you!

Beat Sneak Bandit (Simogo) $2.99 Univ.

Without a doubt in my mind, Beat Sneak Bandit stands out as my personal highlight of the month as it combines the elements of clean aesthetics, a jazzy soundtrack, and clever, intuitive interactive controls to create something magically unique. As the Beat Sneak Bandit you'll need to master your sense of rhythm in order to move around a level, but more importantly you'll need to decipher the correct sequence of actions (at the right time too) in order to get a perfect score. Beat Sneak Bandit has real soul to its sense of style and Simogo have done a great job in bringing it to life.

Reckless Racing 2 (Polarbit / Pixelbit) $4.99 Univ.

Although Firemint may still claim the top prize when it comes to semi-realistic racers, Reckless Racing 2 by Polarbit and Pixelbit has taken first place when it comes to the top-down style of arcade racers. If anything, the only real complaint to be levered against the game is that it's about as typical as they come, but no other title has shown this level of detail and polish in its design. From its series of tracks that wind around different environments, to its huge amount of unlockable vehicles, each with their own strengths and weaknesses that can propel you to victory. You'll have no trouble coming to grips with this game thanks to its range of control options and silky-smooth graphics and physics engine that keep you in line at all times. A perfect pick-up for racing fans.

As always there are so many more games to choose from and we'll highlight a few more for those with cash to burn. Firstly, for those who missed it on the Nintendo DS, pick up GHOST TRICK: Phantom Detective - this whacky puzzler follows in the footsteps of Phoenix Wright, albeit with a whole new edge thanks to the developer who can make claim to both of these titles. For those after something on the cheap, grab Spice Bandits - its polished and varied tower defense gameplay may not be entirely new, but with so much to challenge yourself with it's value is worth its weight in spice. Diggin' Dogs is a cute and refreshingly unique arcade title where you'll take control of three dogs as they search for the treasure of (and try to avoid) Ghost Doggy Pirates. Midway Arcade is a sure-fire trip down nostalgia lane and those who have fond memories of the publisher's classics can find themselves reliving fun (and some not so fun) memories of younger days. Lastly, if you hate it when games throw too many weird controls at you, but you need a whole lot of variety to excite you, grab Pizza vs. Skeletons - there's only one control system, but each level introduces a new way to apply those controls to help crush the undead under your crusty rims.
