Description

••• NZ's ultimate guide for thrill seekers •••

New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world. Everyday a Kiwi is dreaming up new ways of scaring your pants off in one of the most varied and beautiful countries on the planet. The great joy of it is that almost everywhere in New Zealand is easily accessible; you don't have to spend two weeks on a bus to get from snow-capped Alps to golden-sand beaches. In fact in some parts of Aotearoa (the Maori name for New Zealand meaning Land of the Long White Cloud), you can climb a mountain in the morning and go surfing in the afternoon!

Since the invention of the jet boat and the adaptation of the bungy cord, New Zealanders have been trying to find new ways of putting a surprised expression on the faces of their 70 million sheep! (As well as the million or so gob-smacked tourists who come to visit.) It's an intrinsic part of the Kiwi culture: even the most mundane of tasks should be completed with an added frisson of excitement, an extra splash and thrill - all beneath a grand sky, miles from the rest of the world, in a truly unique and awesome landscape. It has to be experienced to be believed.

As activities in this app are all, to some extent, hazardous and therefore require safety precautions, I have recommended companies that provide the best experience. None of the recommendations are advertisements or the result of any inducement for the author; they are a reflection of my opinion on the best trips/experiences available.

••• About the Author •••

Tony Mudd is still - and has been for the last seventeen years - the co-author of the Rough Guide to New Zealand. He has covered every blade of grass in the country at least twice, dipped his toes in every river and been up to his neck in the sea surrounding the country. He has jumped off, out of and in to almost everything, swum, surfed, boarded, sailed, flown, glided, fell (free and otherwise), rode and laughed his way around. If it is worth doing he's probably done it, if he hasn't he will do soon and then write about it so you can decide whether you want to do it as well.

Alison Mudd is usually following Tony, taking photos while trying to swim, surf, board, raft, sail, glide, and fly.
