Description

Learn the States is a teaching tool for elementary school students who need to learn the locations, names, capitals and spelling for each state. This app is about teaching instead of testing. There are six modes, each of which try to teach the user through easy and simple methods.
The first mode is simply an exploration tool. The user can explore the 50 states, tapping on each one to learn about it. The state name is pronounced and spelled audibly. Many students can quickly learn the states by simply exploring.
The other modes attempt to teach by asking the user to locate or name states, but without negative re-enforcement. For instance, in the Find mode, the student can feel free to make a wrong guess without a penalty and search for the correct state. In addition, a Show Me button and take the frustration out of learning by helping the student. After using the Show Me button, the student must still tap on the correct state to continue, thus re-enforcing the new knowledge. Another mode groups states together as it is often easier to learn small groups of states and where they are located relative to each other.
For students that need to learn how to spell state names, the app has a spelling mode where the student can type the name of the state. They can try again if they get it wrong, or use the Tell Me button to listen to the spelling while they type.
