Description

This application is based on a formula devised by a British Gas study conducted in early 2004. The results of this study were first reported in “The Mirror” newspaper on October 7th of 2004. You can find the article online by searching for archives of The Mirror for that day or by searching for “sod’s law” and “formula”.
The author of this application makes no claims of ownership of said formula, nor does the author of this application take any responsibility for anyone’s actions whether or not those actions are based upon the output (or input) of this application.
This application is provided strictly for entertainment purposes.

To use this application, simply think of a task you must perform or an event you need to participate in and then adjust the sliders for the five different attributes with an honest evaluation. As you adjust the sliders, a little tip will show up indicating the current level set for that particular slider’s attribute. As you continue to manipulate the sliders, the percentage and thermometer are automatically updated to reflect the chances for calamity to strike.
For example; if you are evaluating your daily commute to work, the urgency could be near the middle, the complexity is probably pretty low and the importance is somewhere between middle and high (as getting to work on time is typically important). Your skill in the task of commuting is probably high and the frequency is also probably high (providing you commute regularly). This configuration should result in a 4% chance of calamity striking. 4% is pretty good odds that nothing will go wrong so head off to work with confidence.
However, if you find yourself in the dire need of performing brain surgery on yourself... things are probably very different... the urgency is high, the complexity is high, the importance is high, your skill is low and the frequency is low (even if you're an actual brain surgeon I highly doubt you're capable of performing surgery on yourself). This configuration would result in a 100% chance things will go bad, very bad in fact and so you really should consider not performing that self-brain-surgery!
