How We Fixed It: Red and Gold Cards
40% of our football team was ineligible two years ago at the semester when Coach Ralph took over. If you took PE out of their academic schedule 69% of the team was ineligible. It was ludicrous! said Coach Ralph. We threw away the football and concentrated on grades and study halls. We met with teachers and counselors and administration to change everything. But we were not getting feedback from the teachers quick enough to help the players do better in the classes. Coach Ralph invented the Red Card and Gold Card. It was amazing the immediate change in the players and teachers attitudes. The players did not want to get a RED CARD and they wanted to get the GOLD CARDS.

The football players immediately did better in school and their grades came up. Their attendance improved. They were no longer tardy to class. They had become scholar athletes overnight.

The team had the biggest improvement of grades of any school in San Diego County. They had over 25 players with a 3.0 or higher.
