Description

The Musée du Luxembourg has devoted its autumn exhibition to one of the most emblematic artists of the early 20th century, Alphonse Mucha. While Mucha is best known for his posters and his involvement in developing the decorative arts, one part of his artistic output still remains unjustly overlooked. After having achieved great success in the fields of decoration and advertising by developing an instantly identifiable style, the Bohemia-born artist gradually began turning to more personal subjects. This tour, divided into six sections, revisits Mucha’s spiritual questionings as well as his concern for the Czech cause and in promoting recognition of the Slavic people at the end of the First World War. This exhibition also looks at his affinities with the theatre and the pacifist significance of his work.
