What do we know for sure about Super Mario Run after Nintendo's announcement?

I think it’s fair to say that the biggest mobile release of what’s left of this year is going to be Super Mario Run. In fact it might be the biggest release of the year full stop. Sorry Pokemon GO, I’m sure you were real big but quite frankly, who cares?

And today Nintendo has hit us with some new information about what we can expect from Mario’s first outing on mobile. To be honest, it’s pretty exciting just typing that.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s a break down of what we now know to be cold hard facts about the auto-running event of the century. Possibly even the millennium. Maybe even ever. Yeah, that’s right. Ever.

When it’s coming out

We now have a solid release date for Super Mario Run. It’s coming out on December 15th. That’s essentially one month away. I can guarantee that a lot of you are going to spend the entire festive period playing it.

It’s likely that that’s going to be the last big Thursday release before the App Store closes for the holidays. Which could well be a very smart move on Nintendo’s part.

How much it’s going to cost

This is another super important question, and today we got the answer. You’ll be able to download Super Mario Run for free. But that will only give you limited access to the three game modes that are included.

To get everything you’ll need to buy a £7.99 / $9.99 in-app purchase. So any fears we might have had about the game being horrible free to play shovelware can pretty much be put to bed right now. To all intents and purposes, this is a premium game.

What’s going to be in it

Nintendo has also revealed what we can expect from the game. There are going to be 24 stages spread out across six worlds. My terrible maths skills tell me that that means it’s six stages a world.

There’ll also be 100 collectible items that will let you decorate your kingdom. We’re not sure how that will all work, but collectibles are big business in mobile, so having them in place is a damn good idea.
