The Monday Musing - What do we want to see from the iPhone 8?

Ah Monday, what a perfect time to get introspective and think about some of the things that are going on in mobile gaming right now.

But what is going on in mobile gaming right now? Not a lot, so let's put on our special magical future-looking spectacles and have a peer into the future of that sort of gaming what we all love so much.

There'll be a new iPhone next year. There might even be two, who knows? 2017 does mark the tenth anniversary of the world-changing handset after all.

But what do we want to see in the iPhone 8? What does Apple need to do to make sure it stays ahead of the gaming handset curve? Well, how about some of this stuff?

More 3D Touch

For gaming, 3D Touch could be a – if you'll forgive the pun – game changer. Here's something that increases the potential inputs for your phone. And when your phone is essentially just a piece of glass, adding some more inputs to it is going to be a good thing.

This really should be a killer app for the iPhone in gaming terms. But so far we've only really seen Warhammer Freeblade making much use of it. Apple already has a head start on the other manufacturers when it comes to this, but seeing it front and centre in the 8 could, and should, happen next year.

Better storage options

Apple moved in the right direction by getting rid of the quite frankly useless 16GB version of the 7. But if you ask me 64GB should be the base line. After all, that's hardly anything nowadays.

Not having to compromise on downloading the latest game or saving those photos of your children or whatever would be really quite nice. Plus as game sizes get bigger, having somewhere to put everything would be lovely.

A dedicated gaming App Store

Games aren't apps. I mean they are, but let's be honest, a dedicated gaming store that you can open and have a look at would be ace. Music and books are already split apart, so are podcasts. So let's give gaming its own space too.

It'll make curation easier, giving more space to the games that people should be playing. It'll be another icon on your homescreen, sure, but there are worse things in the world than that. Like dropping your phone in the toilet.

Better connections

Look, Game Center is a piece of rubbish. It always has been. Think of using something like PSN or Xbox Live, then compare it to the quite frankly awful UI and UE of Game Center.

We want to play with people, we want to talk with people, we want to compare our trophies. So let us do that Apple. I mean, honestly, it's not that difficult.
