Horizon Zero Dawn will never come to iPad and iPhone, but here are some games to play instead

By , on February 22, 2017

Horizon Zero Dawn is, if you'll forgive the pun, on the horizon. Is that even a pun? I can't decide. Anyway, it's coming out next week. It's a big shiny action RPG from the developer behind Killzone, and it's getting some pretty good reviews.

But here at AppSpy we only really like big shiny things if they fit in our pockets. Like medium sized emeralds. But more like mobile games. And that got me thinking, since Horizon Zero Dawn isn't coming to mobile, what could we play instead?

Well, we could play these games. They might not be as polished, they might not have as many buttons, and all-in-all they probably won't be as good as Horizon Zero Dawn. But they might pass the time, and sometimes that's all you can ask for.

If you click on the emboldened name of the game below, you'll be taken to the App Store via the magic of hyperlinks, where you can buy the game in question.

Eisenhorn: Xenos

This is probably the closest you're going to get to Horizon Zero Dawn in terms of AAA quality on the App Store. And it's pretty gloomy too. Just like Horizon Zero Dawn, which is set after the apocalypse.

You lead the titular Eisenhorn through a series of levels, punching, kicking, shooting, and solving mysteries. There are big shades of Arkham Asylum here, but way more in the future than that.

The controls are pretty good, it looks lovely, and it's a premium game in a world of free to play tat. Also James hates it, which is why the video above might be slightly tonally different to my gushing.

Implosion - Never Lose Hope

By all good barometers, Implosion should not work. It's super fast, super violent, and you shouldn't be able to control it as well as you can with a touchscreen.

But somehow it all just squishes together into a chaotic shower of robot and alien slashing. It's gorgeous, it's frantic, and you feel in control for almost all of the time.

Sure it's not as grim or as big as Horizon Zero Dawn, but part of me expects that it's going to be a lot more fun.

Wayward Souls

Less shiny, less AAA, but every bit as ARPG. Wayward Souls is one of the finest games on the App Store. In fact, it's one of the finest games full stop.

Trawl through dungeons getting murdered by awful creatures, honing your skills so the next time you meet them you're less likely to get murdered.

It's super hard, it doesn't care about you, and while you might not be able to ride a robo-moose like you do in Horizon Zero Dawn, you definitely shouldn't let that put you off.
