There are loads of genres that are synonymous with mobile, and one of those is tower defence. It's sort of fallen onto hard times in recent years though, with more powerful phones able to deal with more complex games. That doesn't mean you should ignore tower defence games though, far from it.

Because while they might seem a tad old fashioned now, the best ones still offer some bite-sized strategy when you're on the go. And, on top of that, they're often an awful lot of fun. And who doesn't like fun? No one important, that's for sure.

That said, if you think we've missed anything out from our list, then be sure to let us know, in the kindest way possible, in the comments section at the bottom of the article. After all, we all play games here, so let's play them together.

The first game on our list isn't really a tower defence game. It's actually a tower offence game that sees you controlling a band of tanks that's weaving its way through towers and traps. You choose the routes you take, you choose which tanks to lead with, and you decide when it's time to morph into giant robots.

Another slightly weird choice - this one sees you playing as a bard. Your lute can call up units though, and you're going to need as many as you can get to defend against the goblin horde on the doorstep. There are projectiles to dodge, new units to unlock, and plenty more going on here as well.

Castle Doombad - download for iOS

The tower you're defending in this one is the lair of an evil overlord. There are heroes storming in to try and rescue your captives, steal your stuff, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. You build new rooms to keep them at bay, each filled with ever-more fiendish traps.

There's more action here than in your standard tower defence game. You build your towers, for sure, but you're also running around the levels waving a massive, zombie-mushing axe around. It doesn't all gel together perfectly, but it's by far the most modern tower defence game we've included in this list.

Those of you who are looking for a more traditional tower defence experience should definitely grab this one. It's the classic tale of towers, paths, and heroes, all presented in some of the nicest cartoon graphics you're ever likely to see in the palm of your hand. Sure it's old school, but when it's this much fun you don't mind slipping your uniform back on.
