Icelandic developer Solid Clouds has revealed details about their latest project; Starborne: Frontiers. Described as a “Squad RPG”, Frontiers will be set in the same universe as Solid Clouds MMORTS Starborne: Sovereign Space.

Solid Clouds has reported that a playable version of the game has been pre-launched, and in December 2021 a technical demo was hosted for 2000 players in Asia to stress test the stability and performance of the server infrastructure, and how well it runs on various devices. Reports indicate that the server managed well without any big issues and that the game functions well on many devices. The team has now moved on to start the development of several core features.

Set in the Starborne universe, Frontiers will allow players the chance to recruit over 90 ships taken from the factions present in the Sovereign Space world. There will be multiple ways available for players to enjoy the game, with a 10 chapter campaign being announced with selectable difficulty options. A Strongholds mode will task players with completing challenging tactical scenarios with the difficulty ramping up with each completed challenge. PvP will be available through the Arena mode, giving gamers the chance to outwit and outgun other players.

In addition to these features currently in development, Solid Clouds has laid out future plans to develop a roguelike mechanic for the game, to give exciting replayability options for players. To build on the PvP aspects, an Alliance system is being looked into so gamers can work together to achieve various goals, and undoubtedly take part in battles against other Alliances. When Starborne: Frontiers launches there will be a variety of events and tournaments for players to compete in, as well as additional ships being introduced to expand the already sizeable roster.

There has been no definitive announcement on platforms or release date, beyond an announcement of launch being mid-2022.
