Ateam Entertainment has announced the launch of Season Two for its battle royale Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier. Developed in conjunction with Square Enix, of course, The First Soldier is the series' first foray into the battle royale genre.

For the uninitiated, The First Soldier is a canonical entry into the Final Fantasy VII series, set 30 years before the original. So, no fears for anyone who has yet to stumble upon THAT moment. The story, such as it is, follows the creation of Shinra Electric Power Companys’ SOLDIER program, intended to bolster their miltary, however, given the nature of the game the story quickly goes out the window, and it all boils down to a total of 75 players knocking the Mako out of each other with that sweet sweet FF7 dopamine.

The game pits one player, or teams of three, against 70 other players in a mostly third-person shooter style, with the option to swing a sword or throw out a magic spell here or there. There is also an RPG lite element to the game, as there are monsters roaming around that can be killed for EXP and ways to find or earn money to buy or upgrade weapons or items at vending machines, including Materia, the classic magic spells from FF7, such as Fire or Blizzard. There are also the classic Final Fantasy jobs in the guise of Styles to choose from that provide different skills, with the launch of Season 2 dropping the Dragoon style, complete with its famous High Jump abilities.

Alongside the new style, Season 2 introduces a new Materia in the form of Teleport. As the name suggests, this allows players to instantly warp from one spot to another, leaving a portal behind that other candidates can use. This can provide interesting new tactics for coordinated team attacks, or if not careful, can lead to a sneak attack in the form of a sword to the back of the head. Of course, that will feel like a blessing with the release of the iconic Bahamut now flying around the battlefield. When the dreadwyrm descends onto the battlefield, players will have the chance to battle the beast, with the possible reward of the Bahamut Summon Materia, that when used turns the player into Bahamut themselves, able to fly around and fire attacks from the air, including the signiture Megaflare.

On top of these gameplay additions, the new season pass adds new Bahamut-themed skins for players to unlock. Even without purchasing the pass, the Bahamut Jacket, Bahamut Circlet and Bahamut Chocobo Saddle are able to be earned for free. There are even Bahamut-themed melee weapon skins available to purchase for 150 Shinra Credits, or five Special Shinra Pack Tickets, of which 20 are available through login bonuses.

Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier is availible to download now on Google Play and the App Store.
