A new entry has been released in the world of popular RPG The Bard’s Tale, titled Warlocks of Largefearn. Developed in conjunction with Xbox Game Studios inXile entertainment and Wanderword, the game was first released on smart speakers, and brings with it an interesting control mechanism.
For those who haven’t heard of them, Wanderword is one of the leading developers in the field of interactive audio entertainment games, which is a big hint to how The Bard’s Tale: Warlocks of Largefearn can be controlled. That’s right, whilst the option to interact with the menus and gameplay by touch remains, the game can be played using only voice commands if desired, which is an interesting sounding idea.
When discussing the inclusion of Wanderword in the development process, an inXile entertainment spokesperson said “It’s exciting to see how Wanderword has brought The Bard’s Tale to a new medium, staying true to the world and fantasy while exploring new ways to play. We think everyone’s really going to enjoy playing in the Bard’s Tale world in a brand new way.”
Warlocks of Largefearn takes the action of The Bard’s Tale far from the city of Skara Brae, and centres on the small secluded settlement town of Largefearn, whose citizens have been disappearing under mysterious circumstances. As always, it is the player's job to figure out what is going on, because who better to solve a big local issue than that stranger who just showed up?
There are four unique classes to choose from; Bard, Fighter, Rogue and Practitioner, which is a fancy way of saying Mage. Each of these classes is also able to choose between two advanced subclasses down the line for added customisability. A Rogue can become an Assassin or a Sniper, whereas a Bard could specialise as a Troubadour or a Warchanter. Of course, there are also multiple companions that can be recruited to round out the party, all of whom can offer advice to the player throughout the journey, and who can join in with the turn-based combat.
