The newest entry to the iconic Streets of Rage series is coming to mobile. Streets of Rage 4 was released to critical acclaim on PC and consoles in 2020, and now Playdigious is teaming up with Dotemu, Lizardcard and Guard Crush Games to bring the brawler to the hands of the masses.

The series was developed by Sega, with the first game releasing in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive for those outside North America. The story centred around a handful of former police officers who run sideways through the city liberating it from an evil sundicate headed by the evil Mr X, a fairly bland villian who is able to successfully take over a whole city but can’t fend off three unarmed men whilst he has a gun. The series ended as a trilogy in 1994, with the first two performing considerably well whilst Streets of Rage 2 is widely considered one of the best beat em ups ever made.

Streets of Rage 4 brings back the original trio of Axel, Blaze and Adam whilst inctroducing two new heroes, Floyd Iraia and Cherry Hunter. A new crimal syndicate has arisen and taken control of the streets once again, and even corrupted the police force, and it is down to the band of vigilantes to come back and save the city once again.

The gameplay retains the spirit of the iconic side scrollering action of the Street of Rage series whilst also adding a few new fighting mechanics to keep it feeling fresh, pairing it with the retro style hand-drawn comic-inspired artistic direction, to really slap gamers in the face with that nostelgia. There will even be 13 alternative retro characters, secret retro levels and the opportunity to enable retro pixel graphics, or choose the Streets of Rage 1 and 2 OSTs. We don’t talk about 3.

Streets of Rage 4 is available to pre-order now on Google Play and the App Store, with a release date of May 24th.
