One of the most successful mobile apps ever and the king of endless runners, Subway Surfers, is celebrating a decade of service with a huge fan competition. By entering on social media, players will be in with a chance to work with SYBOs design team and create the next in-game character.

The history of Subway Surfers is littered with a plethora of astonishing feats. Since launching in May 2012 the app has been downloaded more than 3 billion times, and has been played for over 14 billion hours. As recently as 2020 there were 100 million monthly active players and was the second most downloaded mobile game of the year, as well as being the most downloaded game in Google Play’s history, and the first game to have one billion downloads, and the most downloaded endless runner in the App Store's history. This is truly one of the most popular games of all time.

To celebrate this, developers SYBO have been making a year of its decade milestone. They have worked with several charities to use their global reach to do some good, which is a commendable action. From starting Play 2 Plant initiative with Ecologi to plant 200,000 trees to teaming with Lady Gaga and Cynthia Geranottas’ non-profit Born This Way to raise awareness for the annual BeKind campaign to benefit mental health, the devs have been busy. But not too busy to keep releasing new content and features.

Recently, they have launched their own Subway Surfers Supper Runner competition that lasts until June 5th, granting players the chance to have their own character join the team. They are asking people to go to social media, and use the hashtags #SubwaySurfers, #SubwaySurfers10Years and #SuperRunners to show and tell what makes them a Super Runner. The competition is available to enter on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram.

The game itself is getting a nice makeover too to celebrate 10 years. Taking place in Copenhagen, the scenery and special effect will take on a futuristic look, along with the runners. The main characters will all sport superhero skins, debuting with Jake.

The CEO of SYBO, Mathias Gredal Nørvig, said of the competition, “We would not have held our chart-topping position, widespread popularity, or three billion-plus downloads without our Fans and incredible Team. The Super Runner competition is just one way we can give back to our incredible SubSurf community”

Subway Surfers is available to download for free now on the App Store and Google Play.
