Pokemon Go celebrates seven years of getting people out and about

Seven years ago saw the biggest exodus of introverts from their abodes, as Niantic released Pokemon GO and greatly improved millions of people's health. To celebrate, you can take part in a huge variety of events, including hanging out with one of the greatest starters in all of Pokemon; Squirtle.

It is hard to think of another game in recent memory that has done more to get gamers out of their houses and moving. Over seven years, more than 17 billion battles with Team GO Rocket have occurred and more than 11 billion Raids. Trainers have caught 614 billion Pokemon and traded 11 billion, which is quite nice that people don’t want to give them up, or immediately send them to the candy grinder.

This celebration debuts perhaps one of the three best Kanto starter evolution lines in a special party hat. Wartortle and Blaistoise will retain their headgear when you evolve a Squirtle in the hat, and it is worth it to see a giant Blastoise in a tiny hat. You may even get a shiny one if you get lucky enough.

Continuing on the Starter theme, each day from July 6th to July 12th sees trainers have an increased chance to catch starters from each generation to celebrate where all our journeys began. During this time, you have an increased chance to become Lucky Friends and an increased chance of getting a Lucky Pokemon through trades. You can also get a bevvy of Gimmighoul coins when you spin Pokestops with a Golden Lure Module.

Each day will bring with it a special modifier to take advantage of. These range from double Candy from catching Pokemon to friendship levels increasing twice as fast and half distance to hatching eggs. Luckily, this egg event coincides with the Community Day on July 9th, where you will encounter more Squirtles, being the seventh Pokemon on the seventh anniversary.

Pokemon Go can be downloaded now from the App Store and Google Play.
