Rockstar Releasing Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition On iPhone This Autumn (Updated)
UPDATE: Since this story went live, Rockstar have confirmed that Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition will be playable on older generations of the iPhone in the future. It'll also be available on the iPad 2 and various Android devices.
(Original story follows...)
Grand. Theft. Auto. III. iPhone.
These are the five words every iPhone-wielding 'hardcore' gamer has been longing to hear / see / smell in a single sentence since the year dot.
Okay, summer 2008.
Anyway, Rockstar Gamer will be putting you out of your long-term misery this autumn when they unleash Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition on the iPhone 4S.
Yes, you read that correctly. This special edition of GTA III will be compatible with Apple's fifth-generation smartphone and Apple's fifth-generation smartphone alone when it comes to blowers.
We can speculate until next Tuesday on the technical reasons behind this decision, but we'll assume it's because the A5 SoC powering the iPhone 4S is the only chip capable of coping with the game's complex processing demands.
The game itself, by the way, follows the story of a con called Claude, who gets betrayed by his bird during a bank heist. Cue lots and lots of criminal activity.
To whet your appetite for Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition, check out the 5-star GTA: Chinatown Wars on iPhone. It'd be a crime not to. Ho.

I do believe I read on IGN that GTA 3 will be coming to older versions as well :D
You're a little off, it's not just for the iPhone 4s:
Apple iOS: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Looks like all dual-core devices though.
What's an 'Android', try2bcool69?? Heh
I just thought you might want to correct your statement: "This special edition of GTA III will be compatible with Apple's fifth-generation smartphone and Apple's fifth-generation smartphone alone.", since it's not the truth, i.e. liar-liar-pants-on-fire.
I only researched it further because the iPad2 has the A5 chip, and I wanted make sure mine would play it.
Integrity in journalism means setting your fanyboism aside when reporting the news, amiright?
Since AppSpy is dedicated to iPhone gaming, I didn't think it necessary - originally - to list the iPad 2 and Android devices with which GTA III will be compatible in this story. I see your point, though, sir, and have updated the story accordingly. ;-)
Well technically III is a number...but then I'd just be trolling if I meant that. I'm a bit sad its for iOS 5 only and Iknow its probably never make its way to the Ipod or older version of the iPhone, but just having this beast of a game in the appstore is reassuring and hopefully one day I may decide to get a 4GS or better.
Fair point, FalloutNewVegas.
4 words and 1 integer just didn't have the same ring to it. ;-)
