Namco Bandai releases free-to-play Soulcalibur game on iPhone and iPad

Namco Bandai’s free-to-play take on its popular one-on-one brawler Soulcalibur has just hit the App Store. Titled Soulcalibur Unbreakable Soul, this mobile iteration of the series builds on its outlandish story mode, sending you on a quest to find the fragments of the evil Soul Edge. Before getting to the action, however, you are be treated to a tutorial of every system the game has to offer. While Unbreakable Soul’s gameplay may look familiar at first glance, its combat is based around queuing up moves. Cards at the bottom of the screen trigger attacks. Match three or more of the same cards together and you'll get a combo. As a free-to-play game, there are plenty…

Warhammer 40,000: Carnage Review

Within the 40K universe, Space Marines are walking tanks. If you are being invaded by hundreds of Orks, all you need is one of the Emperor’s finest to hold back the storm. This is exactly the feeling Warhammer 40,000: Carnage attempts to deliver. Rather than commanding a squad. you take control of a single Ultramarine ploughing through waves of Orks. Armed with only a bolt pistol and a combat knife you set out to find Captain Tychaeus, a space marine champion that has falle…

AppSpy Plays: World of Tanks Blitz (Twitch catch-up)

James and I took to the virtual battlefields on Tuesday in recently soft-launched military MMO World of Tanks: Blitz. Jumping into our newly acquired tanks, we quickly formed a Platoon and started rolling around each combat arena as a duo, smashing the living daylights out of anyone who stood before us. Well, that was the plan, and though we certainly did to begin with, I think our luck was starting to run out about halfway through. If you weren't around for the Twitch stream (live daily @ 5pm UK | 9am Pacific | 12pm Eastern), then never fear: you can catch up with the Past Broadcasts section of Twitch, or over on our YouTube channel, or by aiming your sights squarely on the play button b…

Neon spike-dodging scroller Dextris is out now on the App Store

Chaotic Box’s new neon-soaked auto-scroller Dextris is out now on the App Store. Dextris sets you the simple goal of avoiding spikes as you whizz ever onwards up the screen. Responsive controls let you direct two blocks left and right past a series of pointy hazards. Pressing on the right of the screens causes both blocks move right, while pressing on the left of the screen will see them dutifully dodging to the other side. Hold down both sides of the screen, however, and the blocks shoot to opposite sides of the screen, allowing you to squeeze through tighter gaps. If you feel like giving Dextris’s colourful twitch gameplay a go then you can grab it from the App Store…

METAL SLUG DEFENSE Review

Review SNK PLAYMORE By Alex Beech, 3 months, 3 weeks ago
METAL SLUG DEFENSE Review

When we think Metal Slug, our minds turn to classic arcade side-scroller action. What we don’t think of is the tower defense genre. However, that is precisely the catagory which SNK Playmore's new free-to-play title Metal Slug Defense falls into. That's not to say that there isn't some crossover between the classic games and this new enterprise. Creating a 2D side-scrolling tower defense title has allowed the developer to lift art straight from previous Metal Slug games. Th…

Icy platformer Last Inua will be sliding onto the App Store later tonight

Glowforth’s chilling début title Last Inua is coming to the App Store at midnight tonight. In this icy puzzle platformer, you take control of two Inuit heroes as they try to save their snow-covered home from the demon Tonrar. The pair of frostbitten adventurers are actually father and son duo Ataataq and Hiko, and they must work together if they hope to succeed. Luckily, Hiko is blessed with magical powers that allow him to create paths of light to aid his father in navigating the slippery world, and help solve the game's various puzzles. While Hiko can utilise mystical powers, father Ataataq's unique traits are far more down-to-earth. Rather than casting spells, he ca…

Tower defence game Castlestorm - Free to Siege is out now on the App Store

The iOS port of  PC and console tower defence game Castlestorm, has just smashed its way on to the App Store in the form of Castlestorm - Free to Siege. This free-to-play translation of the original Castlestorm has been in beta since February on Android devices. Now, with the kinks in its business model hammered out, Zen Studios has brought it to iPhone and iPad. The medieval styled tower defense title marries 2D tower defense combat with physics-based construction and destruction. As you build your tower, the integrity of your base is dependent both on the materials you use and your architectural skills. Place too much weight on the wrong support, and you could quickly find the…

Retry | Hands-On

Retry is the latest game from Rovio. Well, technically, it's the first game from Rovio LVL11, the company's new publishing arm created to focus on game experiences that aren't related to Angry Birds. The game is a single-tap affair in which you must guide your tiny aeroplane from airfield to airfield, avoiding environmental obstacles and severe weather effects along the way. It's also really, really, really hard. How hard? Let me show you with my hands-on video below.…

Republique Review

République begins abruptly with you receiving a call from the panicked hero, Hope. Trapped in a totalitarian state, the young girl longs for freedom. Believing that you are her last chance of escape, Hope asks you to use your hacking skills to manipulate the city’s electronics to help free her. It is a strange take on the stealth genre, that has you leading Hope remotely through the oppressive world. The 1984-inspired fiction sees the walls covered with surveillance camer…

Developer Wargaming.net has just soft-launched its free-to-play game World of Tank Blitz in selected territories. The developer’s new iOS title is a translation of its incredibly popular PC MMO World of Tanks, which currently boasts over 80 million subscribers.
