Blip Blup Review
Sometimes, one tap is all it takes. Well ok, often it takes more than one tap. But one of the goals of the amusingly named block puzzler Blip Blup is to fill up each stage's tiles with colour in as few taps as possible. Upon tapping any tile, a blast of colour will shoot out in all directions, surging forward until it is blocked by a corner or barrier There's a preview function to help you out while you're still learning the ropes. Before releasing your finger from the screen, the ti…
Watch The Video ReviewBaldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition Removed from App Store
It seems not only has Baldur's Gate: Enhanched Edition been removed from the App Store under the vague reasoning of "contractual issues", this has halted the latest game patch and development on the sequel as well. Hopefully whatever is causing this can be sorted out quickly. After all the hard work from the developers to polish up and port this classic RPG the last thing anyone wants is a legal issue tearing things down. We will have to wait and see what happens. [Website letter]…
Friday News Wrap-Up 21 June 2013
With the App Store arrival of a certain highly acclaim UFO-centric strategy game, it's been a pretty big week for iOS gaming. Let's get stuck in, shall we? XCOM®: Enemy Unknown iPad Review
The iOS version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown represents something of a gamble. Developer 2K China has spent time and money of porting last year’s console and PC strategy favourite to iPad and iPhone. This is no companion app – XCOM iOS is the real deal. Apart from some derezzed visuals and a slightly smaller map count, what you’re looking at is the complete XCOM experience in portable, touchscreen form. If you were abducted by aliens and missed the hype surrounding the gam…
Watch The Video ReviewRovio publishes Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage
With Angry Birds steward Rovio now taking smaller devs under its expansive wings, we're going to see some new iOS games with some seriously flashy trailers. The first game to get the Rovio Stars big budget video treatment is Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage. It's a 3D physics puzzler that bears a passing resemblance to Rovio's own bird-flinging franchise. However, instead of catapulting fowl towards pigs, you must swipe blocks of ice to free your viking buddies from their frosty tombs. You won't just be liberating Nordic warriors, though. There are chests of treasure to grab, quests to complete, and bosses to fight along the way. We suggest you have a look at the Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage t…
CRUSH! Review
As a species, humans are great at many things. One talent we share is the ability to recognise patterns (sometimes patterns which aren't even there). This is handy, as Crush! is a game based entirely around pattern recogntition. Clumps of coloured blocks make their way towards the base of the screen. It's your job stop this column of cubes reaching the bottom. Tapping a coloured block will cause all blocks of the same colour to vanish, making the stream collapse upwards. However, a ne…
Watch The Video ReviewDespicable Me: Minion Rush Review
Temple Run has a lot to answer for. Since the monumental success of the 3D auto-runner, it has become the default template for developers looking to score an accessible, family-friendly hit. Despicable Me: Minion Rush is the latest Gameloft movie tie-in to follow this trend. You take control of one of Gru's yellow helpers, whom you must direct left and right, up, and down towards collectable bananas, and away from oncoming hazards. If you've ever played an endless runner, you know ex…

The latest episode in Gameloft's premiere FPS franchise Modern Combat has just received its biggest update yet - and we have the video to prove it. Entitled the 'Meltdown Update', this downloadable expansion to Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour adds new maps, weapons, and multiplayer modes. First off, you can now explore the Fracture, Extraction, and Backfire maps. These will see fighting for your life on the streets of Barcelona, and blasting your way accross the ice of Antarctica. As for fresh firepower, you'll gain acess to a Special Forces sniper rifle. Oh, and a grenade launcher pistol. That's right: you get a pistol which launches grenades. Merry Christmas. You can also also…
Pinball Rocks HD iPad Review
Pinball Rocks HD is an odd franchise. On the surface, it's a free-to-play pinball title, featuring a selection of purchasable rock 'n roll-themed tables. However, browse through the song selection menu, and you discover the trappings of a music game, one which is keen for you to shell out cash for extra tunes. In actual fact, the expandable soundtrack is just that: a soundtrack. The only way music impacts gameplay is thematically. While the basic free-to-play table is dressed in gener…
Watch The Video ReviewWatch Dogs Live
Watch Dogs is one of the more anticipated games that will be released this holiday season, and as we head into the next console generation, mobile games are going to play a larger part in these releases. Watch Dogs Live is an app that is kind of like Foursquare or Geo Caching, but your involvement is rewarded not only with experience inside the game, but the ability to win prizes as well (including a car). You visit locations in your city, and the longer you control them, the more exp you gain, and the greater your chances to win are. The app is being soft launched in Canada but should make its way worldwide very soon.…
Where's my Mickey?
We've had Where's My Water?, and Where's my Perry?, and while both games got a lot of love here on Appspy, one wonders if another franchise based sequel is going to the well one too many times (I mean the well has to run out of water sooner or later). The game is full of new additions to the gameplay however, as well as some unlockable short cartoons featuring the famous icon. Have a look at the trailer. The trailer says "Out now" but it is not yet available on the App Store. If you're interested, check back later in the week.…
Omicron HD iPad Review
The colour-tapping casual puzzler Omicron has been on the App Store for a couple of years now. However, clearly bored by the flat visuals and limited modes of the original, the devs have decided to completely overhaul and re-launch the game via a recent update. The core gameplay remains the same as always. You are presented with a colour at the beginning of every round. It's your job to tap every matching tile that appears, with the intention of clearing the screen. Successfuls taps a…
Watch The Video ReviewWay of the Dogg Review
It may surprise you to hear this, but Way of the Dogg, a blacksploitation, time manipulating rhythm fighter starring rasta rapper Snoop Lion, isn't zany enough. You'd think a game that casts Snoop as a kung fu guru who possesses the secrets of time travel would be chock full of psychedelic visuals, crazy characters, and inventive special moves. Instead we have a perfectly competent rhythm game, one which arguably works better on iOS than it does on consoles, but which fails to take f…
Watch The Video ReviewXCOM: Enemy Unknown out on Thursday
Strategic UFO shooter XCOM: Enemy Unknown is due to appear on the App Store this Thursday. This release will be an almost identical port of the acclaimed console and PC title of the same name. If you've never stumbled across the console version, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based strategy game which places you in command of a military response unit. You job is to monitor, manage and repel UFO incursions. Here's what you need to know: Firstly, it'll be available on iPhone and iPad. Secondly, as it's a port of a recent console release, you're going to be dealing with a pretty hefty file size. We're talking gigabytes rather than megabytes here, meaning you might have to m…
TITAN Escape the Tower Review
The original Titan on the Amiga was fairly innovative when it was released back in 1989. It took the brick-breaker genre's paddle and ball, and set them inside labyrinths which allowed the paddle much greater movement. This resulted in a new approach to the standard brick-breaking gameplay. Titan: Escape the Tower is both remake and homage. The question is, of course, whether this innovation is enough to create a great game - especially twenty four years later. When watching videos…
