Across Age ™ Review

With so many different games in production for the App Store it's easy to see the experimentation that goes on, resulting in new or modified genres. Across Age is a fantasy Action-RPG from FDG Entertainment that's perfect for the platform and adds to the genre in an interesting way. Initially there's nothing too new about the controls of Across Age as it uses the standard virtual analogue stick and button combinations, but the game quickly introduces a character swapping mechanic that…

Arodius - A Dual-Stick Shooter with Plentiful Power-Ups Review

Sure, you could draw a parallel between the name Arodius and classic arcade shooter Gradius, but you'd be leading yourself astray. Despite some similarities to arcade shooters this latest release from Mobile Force is a great twin-stick shooter that's just begging to be your favorite. There are no strange controls to be had with Arodius as it sticks to the usual left-stick to move and right-stick to fire controls. A special weapon button appears at the bottom of the screen once you've…

X2 Snowboarding Review

Trick-based racing games have always come in and out of vogue and the popularity genre leaders like the Tony Hawk series are a great way of checking how strong the genre is doing. X2 Games has released X2 Snowboarding despite the currently luke-warm state of trick-racing, but is its gameplay good enough to go against the odds? X2 combines several control methods, some of which can be changed to your preference, for great control over your snowboarder of choice. Accelerometer controls…

VANQUISH: The Oath of Brothers Review

VANQUISH: The Oath of Brothers Review

The Action-RPG is a genre that can take a lot of beating. It's a flexible genre that lets you put as much or as little of each genre into the mix and still "get away with it". Vanquish: The Oath of Brothers is the latest Action-RPG from Gamevil and tries something new with a more "on rails" experience. Vanquish sports the usual virtual analogue stick and buttons that you'd expect, but the game is not as simple as it seems. Combat is fairly standard, with the usual combination of attac…

Blue Skies 3GS Review

Since the 3GS came out last year, not many games have required its use, most likely due to the fact that many iphone customers have earlier models. Chris Egerter found a solution by creating a graphical update for his game Blue Skies to take advantage of 3GS graphical features. As a new recruit at Blue Skies Air Force Academy, you learn to fly a helicopter and engage in battle with both air and ground forces. You control your aircraft via tilting your iphone in the direction you wish…

Rise of the Triad: Dark War Review

Originally developed by Apogee software in 1995, Rise of the Triad is a FPS boiled down to its elements. Get to the exit of each level while collecting as many points and inflicting as much damage upon your enemies as possible with a multitude of fun weapons and powerups. Does this iphone port capture the fun of the original however? Mobila have ported the game with a huge selection of control options, but none seem to be optimal. After testing all four main ones, this reviewer found…

Plants vs. Zombies Review

Popcap is known for some very popular addictive titles and has had some great success in porting these to the iphone. Now, just short of a year of its PC release, the cutesy tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies is now available on this mobile device. There is a pack of zombies roaming the neighbourhood and as a local homeowner, you must use the power of your garden (and the help of Crazy Dave) to repel the undead horde. Control is fantastic. Every action is a touch away, and even whe…
