Anomaly developer announces new survival game This War of Mine

You might expect a war game from the developer of the Anomaly series to be a joyous affair, bursting with ecstatic explosions and gung-ho military bravado. However, This War of Mine, the upcoming game from 11 Bit Studios, is notably lacking in jingoism, casting you as a non-combatant desperately trying to survive the conflict that rages around you. You'll need to scavenge for resources, upgrade your shelter, and avoid snipers if you're going to make it out alive. Lead designer on the project, Michal Drowski, spoke about his team’s inspiration for the game: "We came across an article that described how one man survived in a besieged city. We learned about hi…

Rovio tries its hand at a fantasy RPG with Angry Birds Epic

Remember that teaser trailer we posted last Friday? The one featuring the Red Bird leaping out of a suit of armour? Well, it turns out that the video was Rovio's way of telling us that the next Angry Birds game is going to have more in common with Morrowind than Crush the Castle. The game in question is called Angry Birds Epic, a free-to-play fantasy RPG. There will be wizards. There will be warriors. There will be magic. And there will probably be a tsunami of associated merchandise. Combat takes the form of turn-based battles, just like the kind your daddy played when he was a nipper. Naturally, you'll be fighting an enemy force of sword-wielding piggies, battering them with weapons c…

Block Legend Review

Like most puzzle games, Block Legend is all about trying build a high score. The difference here is that rather than simply trying to match coloured blocks to get points, you're fighting a string of fantasy-themed, randomly-spawning opponents in a charming 8-bit world. Different coloured blocks have different effects in battle. Depending on the properties of the tiles, matching two or more touching squares gives you the power to attack or defend. This means you have to keep a car…

Pixel-art skiing game Dudeski will be released at midnight tonight

During the Winter Olympics we reported on a retro skiing game called Dudeski. Now – just in time for the Winter Paralympics – publisher Static Oceans is about to release it onto the App Store. The pixel-art racer has you guiding your skier down Shred Lord Mountain. You'll need to weave your way through four increasingly difficult slalom courses, while avoid all manner of obstacles and dangers - including some grumpy looking Yetis. Though you're limited to four different mountain ranges - The Top, The Forest, Yeti Mountain, and the Totem Trials - each slope is randomly generated, meaning every run should be unique. Dudeski will come to other the EU and US App Stores at midnig…

Scalpel please: Surgeon Simulator out on iPad later tonight

Scalpel please: Surgeon Simulator out on iPad later tonight

Gory, patient-punishing PC game Surgeon Simulator will check into the App Store tonight. This iOS version of the cult hit aims to recreate the sadistic surgery which made the original game so notorious. You assume the role of Nigel, a doctor who appears to have limited control over his motor functions. It's up to you to perform a series of delicate surgeries on Bob, a patient who will soon be writing a strongly worded letter to his medical insurance provider - if he has any fingers left to write with, that is. As you'd expect, the Surgeon Simulator team has tweaked the controls for touchscreens, meaning you'll be using gestures, taps, and swipes to guide your scalpel and activate the de…

Skrillex uses sci-fi shooter Alien Ride to debut his new album

Vertical shooter Alien Ride just got a lot more interesting. Professional ear abuser Skrillex has used the free game as a platform to debut his new album Recess. Alien Ride is a simple shmup that has you destroying asteroids with lasers. However, play it for a few minutes, and you'll unlock tracks from Skrillex's latest jam. The music will only be available for a limited time, but the game provided a link to download the album on iTunes when it goes live on March 18th. This isn't Skrillex's first appearence in a game. In 2012, his music appeared in both Syndicate and Far Cry 3. In fact, mainstream music acts are harnessing the power of the App Store more and more. Just last month, we we…

James & Peter Play: Knock-Knock (Twitch catch-up)

What do you mean you couldn't make it to our live stream of Knock-Knock on our Twitch channel? That's a real shame. You missed out on all the talk about horror movies. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings onto iPhone and iPad this April

Gameloft will be releasing the official mobile tie in to upcoming Marvel movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this April. The new game, in which Spidey faces off against new villains Electro and The Rhino, will play out in an open world Manhattan. Though it appears to be based on the same foundations as the 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man game, Gameloft says it has expanded the city, and improved the visuals. You'll also get to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of new villains, and experiment with some extra combos and special moves.  To be honest, we weren't blown away by the last Spider-Man game, which failed to live up to the surprisingly enjoyable Spider-Man: Total Mayhem. We'll have to wait un…

Smash Hit Review

Smash Hit Review

If we had to invent a genre label for Smash Hit, we'd have to go with endless-shatterer. It's a fitting title for a game which involves flying unendingly forward through a world of glass, using marbles to shatter any obstacles in your path. This is harder than it sounds, however. Colliding with any object in the world sees you dropping ten of your marbles. Once they are all gone, it's game over. Thus selective and judicious hurling is what is required to successfully navigate fr…

Play the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Game on your iPad

It was 1984 when Infocom's original The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Game released. Now, 30 years later, the game is playable for free on the BBC 4 Extra website. The 30th Anniversary Edition of the game keeps Douglas Adams and Steve Meretzky's original text adventure intact. However,  the interface has been given a visual overhaul to update it for a modern audience. This new look improves the gameplay, too. A visual representation of your current location allows you to keep track of interactive items. It also records how many moves you have made, letting you beat yourself up about your inefficient problem solving after each session. Keeping the original adventure intact m…

Meets the stars of Telltale's upcoming adventure Tales from the Borderlands

Telltale has revealed the first story details of its upcoming episodic adventure Tales from the Borderlands.  Speaking on a panel at interactive conference SXSW, the creators of The Walking Dead: The Game explained that the new game, which is set in Gearbox's Borderlands universe, will focus on two new characters: a cyborg businessman called Rhys, and suave con artist named Fiona. According to Telltale's Kevin Bruner, the story will play out from the perspectives of both characters, leaving the player to decide who - if anyone - is telling the truth. "You never really play what actually happened," explains Bruner. "You're playing a Big Fish version of what happened." Rather than cha…

Feed smoothies to an Andalusian donkey with latest Hay Day update

Feed smoothies to an Andalusian donkey with latest Hay Day update

The latest update to insanely popular farming sim Hay Day adds an important item which no farmer should be without: a smoothie maker. We've no idea how this fruit and yoghurt-blending contraptions work within the context of the game, so we're going to assume you strap it to a cow's udders and then feed it strawberries. Arguably more important than a smoothie maker, however, is the newly added ability to expand your land beyond its current limits. Once you've increased acreage, you can beautify your farm with new paths, fences, and other cosmetic flourishes. Finally, if you get bored of playing with the cows, you can get to know the newest member of Hay Day's menagerie: the Analusian donke…
