The steampunk fantasy genre has always been a fascinating concept with its cast-iron constructions, gear driven gadgets and just a touch of the occult to make it all work. With this in mind Namco have released Garters & Ghouls (GnG), a twin stick shooter that features a zombie-killing undead babe.

GnG may play like a twin-stick shooter, but it feels like an action RPG as you grind your way between areas collecting power-ups and cash to upgrade your character. The controls are standard for a twin stick shooter, with the left analogue controlling movement and the right stick controlling your firing direction. Movement is responsive, but the firing can be twitchy, deciding to fire before you've had a chance to aim correctly.

The world of GnG is decidedly Steampunk, from its overt occultism to its pairing of classic 19th century style with futuristic steam-powered technology. The artwork is dark and uses 3D images rendered down in 2D to give the world more depth. There's plenty to get through with a large story campaign and an endless mode to keep you busy.

Garters & Ghouls is frighteningly addictive despite any problems you might have with it. The gameplay is simple, but professionally executed and with added downloadable content there's plenty to enjoy. This is definitely a must try game for anyone after a more action oriented experience in their gameplay.
