PROS

  • The game sound is very well done and gives players the option to use their iPod.
  • The controls are certainly simple – tap the screen to jump, drag items onto the level to use them.
  • There are 26 varied levels to play through.

CONS

  • Hand drawn graphics can look quite crude and ugly at times.
  • The game gives practically no instructions on what to do or how to play.
  • Gameplay feels very stiff thanks to the minimal controls.

VERDICT

SpongeDude offers players some incredibly challenging gameplay, not because of the puzzle difficulty but the lack of instruction and confusing gameplay.

SpongeDude is a physics based puzzle game where players take control of SpongeDude, a green cube who has been exiled to earth for falling asleep while on guard duty of the moon. It’s now up to you to get him off this bizarre planet and back home, but this is easier said than done.

Seeing as how SpongeDude does not have any limbs, he cannot move or walk on his own accord. You’ll need to collect and use various objects that will move, lift or blast SpongeDude through each level. You can jump by tapping on the screen but unless you have a small incline in front of you, jumping won’t do much.

The hand drawn visuals are a bit crude and some facial expressions look downright psychotic. The sound is surprisingly good and does offer players the option to use their iPod during gameplay. There is one story mode to work through and it starts immediately as there is no main menu to browse through.

SpongeDude is an odd title to say the least but does manage to give players some moderate gameplay. However, this level of gameplay is inconsistent as the game doesn’t tell players much at all. You’ll get to a certain point where you have three new items and no idea what to do with them. While no game should ever spell things out, SpongeDude goes to the complete opposite extreme leaving players bewildered at the minimal instructions. But if you enjoy serious brain teasers then SpongeDude might give some minor enjoyment, but only for a short time.
