VERDICT

The price is right for what Boom It Up! has to offer players, but this might be one that only ‘vertical launcher’ game fans will enjoy.

Boom It Up! is a quick reflex arcade game where players must launch a cannon ball as high into the air as possible, much like the barrel shooting mini-games from the Donkey Kong Country series on the Super Nintendo. Obscure references aside, players must launch their cannon ball from one platform to another and blast as high as possible with the limited amount of balls.

Players shoot their cannon balls by tapping on the screen and must time their shots correctly or risk crashing to the ground. Besides the small flying pots, players can shoot their cannon balls into various other objects that will help launch them higher, such as springs, winding gears and trampolines.

GAMEVIL has opted to present the game in its familiar pixelated style, re-enforcing the game’s arcade style. The sound is decent but players can use their iPod if they turn the game music off. The game consists of a single mode but players can submit highscores to global leaderboards or post scores on their Facebook account.

Boom It Up! is an average arcade title that mixes elements from Doodle Jump style games and Donkey Kong barrel shooting. While the game plays fine, overall it just feels a bit stiff. Whether it’s because of the laggy load times between each shot or the moderate difficulty of shooting correctly in a small window of time, the game seems a lot weaker than some of the other games vertical launching games available.
