PROS

  • Classic G'nG gameplay with two characters to choose from.
  • In game DLC.

CONS

  • Stable, but low framerate.
  • 3D graphics aren't used well.

VERDICT

If you expected this to be a direct port of the classic then you may be dissapointed. This is a new game and while it still keeps the original charm and style the 3D elements give the game a new feel which is at times bland, but more casual gamers will enjoy the lowered difficulty.

It's fairly common for older "classic" games to get a port on the iPhone, whether it be as an emulated copy, a stylized clone, or a complete overhaul. Ghosts'n Goblins Gold Knights by CAPCOM attempts to bring the classic arcade game to the iPhone while mashing modern styles together.

Once you're in the game you'll find yourself presented with the familiar platform controls of a virtual d-pad on the left and attack/jump buttons on the right. They do take up a considerable amount of screen space, but do respond perfectly. Arthur and Lancelot (that's right, you can play as both in this new game) do have a unique set of weapons for each character, but otherwise have no major differences in play.

There's a lot of mixed elements in the game that don't quite match like using the classic UI while attempting a new 3D look. The framerate is stable and special effects do brighten up the game, but the 3D isn't the best the iPhone has seen and actually lacks the charm the 2D versions had. It feels shabby when compared to the great hand drawn characters in the selection screen. Bosses have been added to the game's levels which make for a great end of level challenge.

There is another gameplay mode that strips you of armor for the challenge and you can purchase cheats from an in game download store, but what you really come for is the classic gameplay. Ghosts'n Goblins remains true to the arcade even if it doesn't look its best. A great catch for classic game and arcade fans alike.
