5 out of 5

PROS

  • Intense action oriented beat'em-up system.
  • Unique soldier AI behaviors.
  • Challenging mission variants.
  • Excellent 3D graphics and native iPad support.

CONS

  • Some missions border on hair-pulling territory.
  • No power regen with thermal vision adds excess control complexity.

VERDICT

Fans of the Predators mythos might be a bit put off by some of the gameplay, but for most action fans PREDATORS is an intense and absorbing title well worth picking up.

Movie-to-game tie-ins have had a spotted history and often the end result is a rather half-baked title that feels ok, but never really gets to shine. So it's refreshing to not only have PREDATORS for iDevices before its movie comes out, but more importantly this latest release from Chillingo manages to stand on its own feet as an excellent action title.

PREDATORS plays like a fine-tuned beat'em-up set in two relatively large areas where you have to complete various tasks to prove your prowess as a hunter. Movement is handled with a virtual stick and two attack buttons provide access to various combos to inflict damage or finishing moves such as ripping soldiers in half or claiming a skull trophy. Cloaking and thermal vision are available along with a couple melee and several ranged options, though keeping a ranged weapon equipped or leaving thermal vision up prevents your energy (needed for ranged weapons and cloaking) from regenerating.

The detail is amazing, with each unit having a distinct identifiable appearance and behavior when dealing with Predators that are cloaked or running around freely. Watching the AI go berserk when a soldier is killed in front of them while cloaked is a great touch as well. There are 23 missions with an extra endless mode available at the end, but reaching the end can be challenging as a couple missions go beyond difficult and straight on to frustrating.

For action fans, this is a no brainer and a must have; well worth checking out.

Oh and by the way, when you search for Predators in the store, you'll see the Predator icon, but instead of the title just being "PREDATORS", it's actually "Robert Rodriguez presents PREDATORS".

We had the full title when we first posted the review and it's still in the URL, but having the full title seriously screwed up things on YouTube and our frontpage - a small sacrifice (and honestly a stupid decision from the publishers to be quite frank)
