Steam Pirates by Fried Green Apps is an enchanting new RPG for your iPhone that's as whacky as it is fun. If you're worried you'll be locked in to days of grinding gameplay, you'll be happy to know that this is also relatively short title, but once you're done you'll definitely wish there was more.

The game's controls are a mix of touch-based platforming and menu-driven combat sequences common to the RPG genre. Enemies freely wander each of the game's dungeon environments, but various paths are available to explore, with minor platforming sequences often resulting in additional booty to use. Combat is turn based and at times hard to predict, but if you're well stocked on supplies you'll have little trouble with most battles.

Steam Pirates completely rocks-out with a modern pixel-art style, with smooth animations and great steam-punk inspired character designs. You'll find yourself fighting everything from mermaids to robots and even the occasional mini-game to break up the RPG gameplay. It's only a shame that the game is so short as the world is intriguing to explore, diving between plenty of weird and wonderful environments. RPG fans will quickly get used to the game's conventional gameplay, but a lack of helpful descriptions can leave casual gamers in the dark.

Steam Pirates is a weird and wonderful experience from the mind of Luc Bernard that's just perfect for anyone interested in a simple RPG that's appealing to more than just the hardcore crowd.
